Why?
Because most large rugs, especially those with heavier, thicker pile, remain stable on their own or with the help of furniture so they don’t need a carpet pad with grip. Then, these rugs often show up in rooms where you spend lots of time in and want to be comfortable in (think living room, dining room, or bedroom).
That being said, some thinner large rugs like flat weaves can tend to buckle and wrinkle and may need pads with a combination of cushion and grip.

When You Need a 12x15 Non Slip Rug Pad
In most cases, you shouldn’t have to worry about an extra large area rug like a 12x15 rug moving around because they’re usually heavy and have furniture anchoring them to the floor.
HOWEVER!
There’s one exception to this rule: thin or lightweight rugs like a flatweave rug, especially in a high traffic area. These rugs will likely need some non-slip grip to help keep them from moving around, slipping, bunching, wrinkling, or otherwise being annoying.
Even though these 12 x 15 rugs are large with plenty of space to stack furniture on, they’re also super light meaning it’s hard to hold them down.
The solution?

Which pad is best for a 12ft x 15ft wool area rug on hardwood? SpillTech looks good as we have children, or there’s Eco Plush. I get the impression that SpillTech may not be as good to hardwood floors as Eco Plush. What are your thoughts?
I would go with the Eco Plush. It is safe for all types of floors, provides lots of cushioning and is resistant to moisture. If you decide to purchase the SpillTech pad, bear in mind you will receive it in two equal pieces, because it only comes in 6' rolls.

We have an 12' x 15' shag rug on hardwood flooring. The rug will have couches, end tables, and a coffee table placed on it. I am looking for a pad that will add softness and have seen your memory foam pad. Should I get this and at what thickness?
Two great pads that will give your rug a beautifully soft feel are Eco Plush and the Cloud Comfort pad that you have been looking at. My only concern regarding use of the memory foam pad is that if you go for the thickest option heavy furniture will cause indentation.

I have a 12ft x 15ft Dhurrie rug in my bedroom. I purchased a liner from ABC Carpet but after a few years and not a lot of foot traffic, the rubber padding dried up and is now a powdery-like substance. Do you have a rug pad that will work for me?
Yes, I've two options for you. Both rug pads are durable and will last you for many years to come. The first is Eco Plush which is a 100% all felt pad. This is a non-slip pad, but that won’t be a problem because your rug seems to be large enough that it won’t move and doesn't need to be anchored down by furniture. The second option is Cloud Comfort, a visco-elastic memory foam pad. This is made with the same material that you find in memory foam mattresses. Cloud Comfort is the most comfortable pad in or fleet with Eco Plush running a close second.

I would say go for the 1/4" or the 3/8". Neither of these should create a tripping hazard.
