Rug Pads for Stone & Tile Floors
Do You Need a Rug Pad for Tile Floor?
If you want to put a rug or carpet over tile floors, then yes, you probably need a rug pad.
Why? Because a rug pad can anchor your rug on slippery tile floors, add extra comfortable padding to your hard floor, and keep your rug in good condition.
Tile floors can be beautiful, but they can also be hard and cold. Adding a cushioned rug and rug pad can give you that extra level of plush luxury that’s missing from tile.
Benefits of Our Rug Pads for Tile Floors
If you want a rug pad that’s safe for all tile floors and will last for years, our rug pads are the way to go.
Floor Protection |
Our rug pads are colorfast and protective so they keep your tile floors scratch and stain-free. |
Rug Protection |
Especially with uneven tiles, rug protection is essential because they can easily wear down unevenly. A thicker pad will offer that extra layer for even protection. |
Keep Rugs from Sliding |
Our natural rubber and PVC rug pads grip even the glossiest and slipperiest tile flooring so you can keep your rug in place. |
Tile Padding |
A thicker rug pad will add padding to your rug and make hard tile floors more comfortable to walk and sit on. |
Insulation |
Adding a rug pad can help keep your cold tile floors from sapping the heat from your room. |
Sustainability |
A more sustainable alternative to plastic and pvc rug pads. Made in the USA with rubber sourced from rubber trees in southeast Asia and plant jute fibers sourced from India. |
USA-Made |
All our rug pads are manufactured and cut in the United States so we have more control over exactly what materials go into them. |
The Best Rug Pad for Tile Floors by Room and Rug Size
Stone and tile surfaces, while resilient, can be glossed and slippery leaving rugs uneven on your floor finishes. We recommend felt, felt and rubber, and natural rubber rug pads for tile floors, securing and supporting your rugs while preserving your stone and tile floor.
Padding for Kitchen Area Rugs for Tile Floors
When getting padded rugs for kitchen floors, you’ll likely want one of our dual-purpose rug pads that provides grip with a bit of padding. This way, you can be comfortable while you cook or wash dishes without having to worry about the rug moving around or causing a tripping hazard.
The best kitchen mats for tile floors would be our Contour Lock or Super Lock Natural rug pad. Both these pads are approximately 1/8 inch-thick, offer next-level gripping, and are safe for all tile flooring. The Contour Lock combines natural rubber and felt for more subtle cushioning. The Super Lock Natural is a pure grip pad with over 1lb of natural rubber per square yard and uses a waffle design for better airflow and a small amount of cushion.
If you’re concerned about spills in the kitchen, we’d also recommend taking a look at our Anchor Grip rug pad, which uses soybean oils and bio based fillers and is water-resistant to keep spills from getting to the tile underneath.

We received these and they fit perfectly under the two rugs in our kitchen. We highly recommend RugpadUSA.

Bathroom Rug Pads for Tile and Stone
With bathroom rugs and floor mats on tile and stone, you need a rug pad that’s slip-resistant and can handle a bit of water or moist environments.
The best rug pads for this room would be our Contour Lock or Nature’s Grip rug pads. Both these pads are mold and mildew resistant, have good airflow to dry quickly and provide superb grip.
We don’t recommend our fully waterproof memory foam rug pads because they don’t have any non slip qualities, but if you feel you need a waterproof pad, our Anchor Grip pad offers some water resistance to keep water from reaching your tile floor.

Turkish Rugs On Tile Floors Need The Contour Lock Pad!
I received my rug pad yesterday, and it’s exactly what the little Turkish rug in our bathroom needed. I wanted something that would keep the rug from sliding around on the tile floor between our vanity and shower. It’s a “floppy” rug that has no structure or stiffness to it, so this rug pad was perfect! It hasn’t moved once since putting it in place. I was also pleasantly surprised at the cushion it gives as well.

Runners and Small Rugs on Tile Floors (2x8 to 3x10 or Smaller than 4x6)
With smaller rugs in high traffic areas like a 4x6 rug, entryway rug, or runner rug, getting a thinner rug pad with grip should be your priority. These types of rugs often aren't ideal for a thick rug pad because they can pose a tripping hazard or get caught on doors.
With a non slip rug pad, you'll also be able to keep your rug exactly where you want it without having to use potentially floor-damaging adhesives like rug gripper or carpet tape.
General rug pads will often have some form of slip resistance, but our pads like the Super Lock Natural, Nature's Grip, and Contour Lock are specially designed to grip the hard surface and keep your rug secure. All of these pads are approximately 1/8-inch thick and incorporate natural rubber, which grips your tile floor without sticking to it.
Rug Padding with Medium Rugs for Tile Floor (4x6 - 6x9)
Medium-sized rugs typically still need non slip grip, but often do best with slightly more padding to give a more comfortable feel. The best rug pads for this case are our Contour Lock and Superior Lock rugs pads. Both pads combine felt with a natural rubber backing for grip and cushion, but the Superior Lock is slightly thicker at 1/4" thick or 7/16” thick.
The Contour Lock is 1/8"-thick with heat-pressed felt and a natural rubber blend backing. The solid design provides floor protection with moderate levels of cushioning.
The Superior Lock comes in either 1/4"-thick or 7/16”-thick and combines needle-punched felt with our signature 12-ounce jet black checkered natural rubber backing. This pad also uses an additional heat-pressed natural rubber face coat to reinforce grip and prevent premature flaking or deterioration.
Rug Pads for a Large or Extra Large Rug for Tile Floor (8x10, 9x12, 12x15 or Larger)
If you have an 8x10 rug or larger going on tile floors, you'll want to consider rug padding above anything else. With larger rugs, getting a non slip pad won't be as important as getting a cushioned pad because the rug will be heavier and you can anchor it with furniture.
Instead, you’ll want to offset the hardness of tile with a plush pad under your area rug. We’d recommend going for a thick felt or memory foam rug pad.
What Is the Best Area Rug Pad for Tile Floor?
Our top recommendations for area rug padding on tile floors are our Eco Plush, Cloud Comfort, or SpillTech rug pads. Eco Plush uses 100% recycled felt for generous cushioning and protection. It comes in three different thicknesses: 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2".
Cloud Comfort is our upgrade option from Eco Plush and uses 100% visco elastic memory foam like what you’d find in mattresses. We make this pad in two thicknesses: 1/4" or 7/16”.
Finally, if you’re concerned about pet accidents or other liquid spills, our water resistant SpillTech rug pad can act as a barrier to keep liquids from getting to your tile and give you enough time to clean up the spill.

Love it. It is down on a bumpy tile floor and makes the rug lie smooth. Nice and thick, no odor or off gas.

The Best Rug Pads for Tile and Stone by Tile Type
All of our rug pad recommendations for tile and stone floors should be safe for all types of tile. However, we recommend double-checking with your floor manufacturer to see what rug pad material they recommend.
That being said, here are our recommendations for some of the most common types of tile flooring.
The Best Rug Pad for Ceramic Tile Floor
If you have a smaller rug or a rug that is not anchored with furniture, we’d recommend the Contour Lock rug pad.
If you have a larger rug on ceramic tile that does not require grip, our Eco Plush or Cloud Comfort rug pads would be best.
The Best Rug Pad for Porcelain Tile Floor
Porcelain is one of the most durable types of tile on the market meaning you shouldn’t have to worry about any of our rug pads damaging your flooring. We’d recommend considering your rug size and the level of comfort you’d want from your rug pad.
For a low-profile non slip pad, our Nature’s Grip rug pad is a safe, eco friendly option that uses a slip resistant webbed material from natural rubber and organic jute. Contour Lock or Superior Lock will provide grip and cushion with a mix of natural rubber and felt.
If you don’t need grip, check out our Eco Plush or Cloud Comfort pads.
The Best Rug Pad for Stone Tile Floors
Stone tile floors tend to be less even, meaning we recommend a pad with more cushion to make up for it. Our top choices for grip would be either Contour Lock or Superior Lock.
If your pad does not need grip, then our Eco Plush or Cloud Comfort rug pads will work well.
The Best Rug Pad for Heated Tile Floor
Any of our felt and rubber pads or our 100% felt rug pad is safe to use on heated floors. If you need grip, go with either Contour Lock or Superior Lock. If you don’t need grip, our 100% heat-pressed felt pad, Eco Plush is an excellent option and comes in three different thicknesses: 1/4", 3/8", and 1/2".
The Best Rug Pad for Slate Floor
For slate floor, we recommend one of our felt and natural rubber pads for rug gripper and padding. Consider our RugPro, Contour Lock, or Superior Lock rug pads.
RugPro will be your thinnest option for runners at 1/16”-thick. Contour Lock is a budget-friendly medium at 1/8"-thick. Superior Lock provides thicker, more luxurious options at either 1/4" or 7/16”.
The Best Rug Pad for Travertine Tile Floor
With travertine tile, we recommend contacting your floor manufacturer about what materials they recommend for rug pads. If you are able to use natural rubber, then our Super Lock Natural, Nature’s Grip, Contour Lock, or Superior Lock rug pads would all be good options.
If you have travertine tile outside, you’ll want our Super Lock Outdoor rug pad, which is our only pad designed for outdoor use.
The Best Padding for Rugs for White Tile Floors
Using rugs for white tile floors can be a stressful choice because the last thing you want is to end up staining your pristine white flooring. With our rug pads, you can rest easy knowing all our padding is colorfast and will not stain or mark up your floor.
For large rugs that don’t need grip, your best choice is one of our 100% felt Eco Plush rug pads which comes in three different thicknesses: 1/4", 3/8", and 1/2".
For smaller or lighter rugs that need non slip, we’d recommend either our Super Lock Natural or Nature’s Grip rug pad.
How to Keep Rugs From Slipping on Tile Floors
If you’ve ever tried putting a small rug on tile floors without a rug pad, you’ve likely wondered how to keep rugs from sliding on tile floors. It’s one of our most common issues we’ve seen with rugs on tile floors.
So how can you keep it from sliding? Our recommendation would be using one of our grippy, non slip rug pads.
The Best Non Slip Rug Pad for Tile Floors
We’d recommend our Super Lock Natural, Nature’s Grip, or RugPro rug pad for a non slip pad on tile and stone floors. All of these pads use natural rubber to grip the tile without damaging either your tile or your rug.
You can also check out our blog post on how to keep rugs from slipping on tile for other options.
Why Rugs and Tiles Go Well Together
The combination of plush and cozy with elegant and durable is one of the reasons rugs and tiles go so well together. Layering cushioned rugs on stone or tiled floors add a nice contrast that we’d highly recommend.

Customer Questions & Answers
-
Do I need a non-slip pad or a cushion pad?
Non-slip pads are best for high-traffic areas such as foyers and hallways, where thin rugs and runners are prone to slipping and sliding. Our cushion pads add a plush layer for large rugs already anchored by furniture, such as living and dining rooms. Should you decide you need a degree of both grip and cushioning, opt for a felt and rubber pad.
-
How should I measure my rug for a rug pad?
We recommend to start with the width followed by the length of the rug. You do not need to include any fringes or tassels as this can throw off the measurement of the pad. We always recommend to round to nearest half inch for all measurements to get the best fitting pad for your rug.
-
Which rug pads are best for shag rugs?
We would recommend a felt and rubber pad like RugPro, Contour Lock or Superior Lock. If you want a low profile option, RugPro is the best fit. If you would like to add a some cushioning, Contour Lock or Superior Lock is recommended.
-
Are any of your rug pads waterproof? Will they mold or mildew over time?
All of our rug pads can sustain some level of water exposure without harming performance. However, the only pads that contain spill proof moisture barriers that will prevent liquids from reaching your floors are SpillTech, Anchor Grip and Cloud Comfort rug pads. These will preventing pet urine or spills from reaching your floors.
-
When do you recommend a thin pad over a thick one?
Thicker rug pads add an extra layer of cushioning between your area rug and flooring. Thinner carpet pads are better for gripping in high traffic areas. We typically recommend thicker rug pads for larger room rugs and lower profile pads for high traffic areas, however in the end it’s a personal preference of the consumer.
-
Do your rug pads contain any glues or adhesives?
No. Our rug pads do not include any glues or chemicals that may hurt floors.
-
Will my rug pad smell when I remove it from the packaging?

I have a 9'x 13' area rug in a sunroom with a ceramic tile floor. The rug is 100% jute with a chunky weave. Which pad do you recommend?
My recommendation depends on whether or not the pad is going to be anchored by furniture. If there is no furniture I suggest the Superior Lock pad for its powerful grip that will stop your rug from moving. If there is furniture, I recommend our Eco Plush pad. This is a dense felt pad that provides optimum cushioning and protection and is ideal for larger rugs that don't need non-slipping attributes.

This would help prevent tripping and toe-stubbing. Our Superior Lock pad is excellent for preventing slipping and sliding in high-traffic areas
-
We have several handmade rugs on the travertine stone of our kitchen area. What type of pad would you recommend and what thickness? I don't want it to be too thick, but it needs to provide some padding since we will be standing and cooking in this area.
I would definitely go with our Contour Lock pad for your rugs. This is one of our dual purpose pads which means it provides grip and cushioning. It is a low-profile pad that is about 1/8" thick and so it won't bulk out your rugs.
-
Will your Superior Lock rug pad work well on rougher slate tile? I need a pad for my bathroom floor mat which keeps scooting all over the place.
I would go with something thinner such as Nature's Grip. This is an eco-friendly natural rubber and natural plant jute pad that will keep your stubborn floor mat firmly in place. I also suggest exploring the stone/tile section on our website where you will see a number of other suitable pad options for you.

-
My very thin 10'x 13' rug will be going over irregular brick flooring. I’ll order a 1/2" thick pad to avoid seeing/feeling the brick shapes. I know there’ll be a "step off" but should the pad be slightly smaller than usual to avoid creating a trip hazard?
When placing orders with us, we will automatically trim the pad to fit your rug. If you are worried about a tripping hazard maybe you could consider a 3/8" thickness.
-
What type of rug pad should I use for travertine tile?
We always advise customers to contact the manufacturer of their floors if they have specific questions about usage because they will have guidelines to follow.
