Felt and Rubber Rug Pads
Finding the Best Natural Rubber and Felt Rug Pad
The combination of felt and rubber makes for some of the most comfortable and highest performing rug pads.
Why? A cushioned felt surface layer lends long-lasting cushioning underneath your rug, while the reinforced natural rubber backing offers exceptional gripping power that anchors it firmly to your floor. Whether you have an area rug that likes to move or a hallway runner that needs some extra padding, we can help you find the right rug pad that will keep your rugs, floors, and feet happy.
Why Combine Felt and Natural Rubber?
When you have a felt pad, you get a quality rug pad that grips your rug, provides plenty of padding and protects your hard surface floor. The downfall? A felt rug pad won't grip your hard floor.
On the other hand, a rubber rug pad like our all natural rubber pads is a fantastic non slip rug pad and is safe for wood floors and other hard surface floors. But a natural rubber rug pad won't provide as much comfort or padding as felt does.
Now combine both these materials and you've got a pad that ticks all the boxes. Plus, unlike some cheaper rug pads that use adhesive to stick the materials together or use synthetic rubber instead of natural rubber, we gently heat press our recycled felt to the natural rubber. This means you get a fully eco-friendly rug pad with low VOC emissions.
Benefits of a Felt and Natural Rubber Rug Pad
There are lots of benefits of using a felt and natural rubber rug pad. We’ve already gone over a couple, but here are all our favorite benefits from using our felt and natural rubber pads.
Rubber Cushioning Pads |
These pads let you get a rubber cushioning pad rather than just a low profile rubber pad that you’d get with an all rubber rug pad. |
Eco-Friendly and Sustainable |
With the natural rubber from real rubber trees and recycled felt fibers from unused carpet fibers and yarn, the pad is more sustainable and eco-friendly than PVC and plastic rug padding.
You can see our most eco-friendly rug pad options in our eco friendly rug pad collection. |
Non Slip Felt Rug Pad |
Many people like felt in rug pads for its soft cushion and floor protection, but it doesn’t have any non slip qualities.
By combining it with natural rubber, you get a non slip felt rug pad with premium gripping power that doesn’t stick to your floor. This is especially important on hard floors like wood or tile and for smaller rugs and runners that have a tendency to move around. Want to see all your options for a non slip rug pad? Check out our non slip collection. |
Safe For Flooring |
Whether you have laminate flooring, hardwood flooring, or another type of hard surface floor, our natural rubber and felt pads will go easy on your floor and rug making sure they both stay in the best condition. |
USA-Made |
All our rug pads are manufactured and cut in the United States, so we have complete control over the materials that go into the pads and you know you’re supporting USA products. |
10-15 Year Warranty |
We want to ensure that you love your new rug pad for years to come, so all our felt and natural rubber rugs pads come with either a 10 or 15-year warranty. |
The Best Felt and Rubber Rug Pad by Rug Size and Room
We can't lie: Using a natural rubber and felt rug pad is often a solid choice, but there are situations that are really ideal for them. To help you find the best one for your rug and room, these our top recommendations for different situations
The Best Small Rubber Pads for Smaller Rugs and Runners (2x8, 3x10, 2x3, 4x6)
Smaller rugs are more prone to slipping and moving around, so a rubber grip is essential. At the same time, the felt rug pad provides more softness and cushion for under your rug. With the felt and rubber rug pad, you'll benefit from a non slip pad, while still enjoying the luxury of a thick rug pad if you want it.
If your rug is already thick, you’ll want to keep a low profile to avoid a tripping hazard. In this case, a thinner rug pad like our RugPro rug pad will be ideal for you because it has natural rubber to grip the flooring, while the felt holds onto the rug fibers to keep the rug on the pad. This pad is 1/16” thick and has the most powerful grip of all the pads in our fleet.

RugPro Perfect for Our Purpose!
We have a runner on a vinyl floor that ended to slip and bunch up a little bit, even with a non-slip coating on the underside. We chose the RUGPRO variety to grip both floor and carpet, and we didn't need cushioning. The pad was cut to exact dimensions and does precisely what we hoped it would do. The runner doesn't slip, and it doesn't bunch up - it stays flat after repeatedly being walked over.

Small and Medium Felt and Rubber Area Rug Pads (4x6 - 6x9)
Small and medium area rugs will typically need a rug pad with some slip resistance especially if the rug is in a high traffic area like a living room, playroom, or kitchen. On slippery hard floors, these rugs may not have enough weight to stay anchored in place on their own and can be annoying to constantly readjust or cause a slipping hazard.
If you want minimal padding but still want good gripping power, our RugPro rug pad is the felt and natural rug pad you want because it’s just 1/16” thick. The pad also has a solid design to keep dirt accumulation off your floors and better grip your flooring. Finally, the pad is needle-punched with very small holes which makes it easier for your rugs and floors to get airflow.
If you want more padding under your rug, one of our Superior Lock rug pad thicknesses will be best. The Superior Lock pad comes in 1/4" and 7/16” thicknesses so you can decide how much cushion you’d prefer. (Smaller area rugs, we generally recommend staying at 1/4" or less to avoid tripping hazards.)
Both thicknesses use needle-punched felt that grabs your rug and prevents bunching, creeping, and curling, and provides airflow between your rug and floor. They also have a total of 17 ounces/square yard of natural rubber backing to keep your rug in place on even the slipperiest floors.

Keeps the Rug in Place
Great rug pad so far! Our rug slid all over the floors before and now it stays in place. Good quality and I love that it's made for laminate floors.

The Best Felt and Natural Rubber Rug Mats for Large and XL Rugs (8x10 and Larger)
With a larger area rug, you likely won't need too much gripping power in your area rug pad because the weight of the rug and any furniture on the rug will anchor it. In this case, we recommend our cushioned rug pad collection with 100% felt pads and memory foam rug pads.
The one time you will want a non slip rug pad under a larger rug?
Thin rugs and flatweave rugs. With these types of lightweight and thin rugs, a felt and rubber rug mat will work well to keep the rug in place and add extra cushion.
The Best Felt and Rubber Pad For Large Thin Rugs and Flatweaves
With thin rugs, any of our felt and natural rubber pads will make a huge difference to keep your rug in place. The #1 felt and rubber pad we’d recommend for large thin rugs is our Superior Lock rug pad.
This pad will give you lots of extra padding to make your rug feel more plush and comfortable, while the extra durable natural rubber backing will keep the rug in place. This pad comes in two different thicknesses: 1/4" and 7/16”. The felt and rubber are gently heat-pressed together and we don’t use any harmful chemical adhesives so the pads are safe for all rugs, floors and finishes, provided you follow your flooring manufacturers’ instructions and meet proper curing times.

Is Felt and Natural Rubber Padding Safe for Flooring?
Yes. The natural rubber rug backing on our felt and rubber padding is completely safe for almost all floor types and finishes because we don’t use any harmful chemicals or cheap clay fillers.
However, some vinyl and laminate flooring manufacturers recommend against rubber rug padding, so where possible, we recommend double-checking your floor manufacturer’s guidelines.

Customer Questions & Answers
-
Do I need a non-slip pad or a cushion pad?
Non-slip pads are best for high-traffic areas such as foyers and hallways, where thin rugs and runners are prone to slipping and sliding. Our cushion pads add a plush layer for large rugs already anchored by furniture, such as living and dining rooms. Should you decide you need a degree of both grip and cushioning, opt for a felt and rubber pad.
-
What rug pad is best for sisal rugs on hardwood floors, in front of doors?
We would suggest RugPro. It's a felt and rubber pad that's only 1/16th of an inch thick.
-
Are your felt + rubber pads safe to use on hardwood floors?
Yes. Our Felt + Rubber rug pads are tested and approved for use on all types of hardwood floors. Just make sure you follow flooring manufacturer's instructions and don’t use any rug pads for approximately 2-4 weeks after refinishing your floors.
-
Do your rug pads produce any odors?
Our rug pads will not mold or mildew and are completely odor-free. We always make sure all of our rug pads have been properly aired and cured before shipping.
-
Are your felt + rubber rug pads eco-friendly?
Yes. Felt and rubber rug pads are eco-friendly. Our felt is sourced from the top carpet manufacturers and has low VOC emissions. During our manufacturing process the felt is then gently heat pressed to Natural Rubber rather than using traditional glues or adhesives.
-
What materials are used in your “felt”?
Our felt is comprised of leftover yarn, wool, and miscellaneous carpet fibers.
-
What floor types can felt + rubber be used on?
Felt and rubber rug pads are safe for all standard floors and finishes, with the rare exception of some newer vinyl finished floors who recommend using a vinyl pad (Comfort Grip or Anchor Grip). Natural rubber is one of the safest materials you can use on your floors and we have never had any issues with floor staining or stripping.
-
What is the difference between your felt + rubber rug pads?
Both of our Felt + Rubber rug pads are Dual Purpose pads, designed to offer high levels of both cushioning and grip. Superior Lock is thicker than Contour Lock, thus offering more cushion if your looking to maximize comfort. Superior Lock also has a textured reinforced backing that offers slightly more grip than Contour Lock. Therefore, go with Contour Lock if you for a more flush look with moderate cushioning and Superior Lock if your looking to really maximize cushion.
-
I have read that your felt and natural rubber pads are safe for all standard floors and finishes. We've just had laminate flooring installed and wonder if they'll be suitable or if we need to look into vinyl pads.
For laminate floors definitely check with the flooring manufacturer about what is safe to use. But I would stick to felt or our Anchor Grip pad which is a vinyl blend made from plant-based oils and soybean.
-
I have a very valuable Persian rug and want to give it the best protection possible. Will your felt and rubber pads provide that?
Yes they will. As well as alleviating everyday wear and tear your rug is subject to, they will help to preserve its life, ensuring it is in great condition for longer.
-
My rug slides off the rug pad I have. Why would that be? I have hardwood floors and need a pad that will keep the rug in place.
I suggest you look at our Contour Lock and Superior Lock felt and natural rubber pads. Either of these dual purpose pads will adhere to your rug, so you won't need to worry about it slipping off.
-
I have a 100% wool carpet that's about 1/2" thick and I want to put it down on my shiny wood floors. I am after a latex-free pad and was looking at your Contour Lock and Superior Lock pads. Which do you recommend for my needs?
In all honesty, either will suit you perfectly. It just depends on how much cushion you desire. If it's a lot, then select Superior Lock. Also, get in touch with your flooring company to make sure that "natural" rubber is fine for your floor.
-

Just shop by floor type on our website and click on the laminate section. Now, regarding the shape of your pad, just select round shape from the dropdown menu when ordering.

I'm looking for a rug pad for the hardwood floor of my high-traffic living room. We have kids!

I've got a sofa and two chairs on a 10' x 94" wool rug on hardwood floors. Which of your rug pads will be best, RugPro or Eco Plush?
You could go with RugPro or even Contour Lock. I just wouldn't purchase Eco Plush if I was you because it's not a non-slip pad. Even with furniture on your rug, it will probably move. RugPro and Contour Lock are low-profile felt and natural rubber pads with excellent non-slip traction.
-
I am looking for a pad for a 5' x 8' rug in my daughter's room, which has a hardwood floor. Is that too small a size for your Eco Plush rug pad? I am hoping for something that is comfy.
Yes, that size is considered too small for the Eco Plush pad. I recommend a felt and rubber pad such as the Superior Lock at either 1/4" or 7/16" thickness. In addition to the firm anchoring, it has a generous layer of cushioned support that is very comfortable.

I am looking for a slip guard with some cushioning for a 5' x 8' thin area rug in the middle of my family room. It receives a lot of traffic so I don't want the pad to be too bulky and create a trip hazard.
I suggest the Contour Lock pad, which is just 1/8" thick. Or, if you want to add a little more comfort the Superior Lock 1/4". This is a recycled felt and natural rubber non-slip pad that acts like Velcro and will stick to your rug, holding it firmly in place on your floor. So, no more slipping and sliding, bunching and creeping.
-
I have 3'x 5' and 2'7" x 4'11" sisal rugs in front of doors on hardwood floors. What pad is best for them?
I suggest RugPro which is a felt and natural rubber pad that is only 1/16" thick. This low-profile pad is our strongest gripping non-slip rug pad that puts an end to rug movements especially in high-traffic areas. The felt upper layer will grab hold of your rug to prevent wrinkling and bunching while the natural layer will hold fast to the floor. This powerful pad will give you exceptional rug stability.
-
Can I check a couple of things about your Contour Lock and Superior Lock felt and rubber pads? Is the bottom part made of natural rubber? And is this the part that sits on the floor?
Yes to both questions. The bottom part of Contour Lock and Superior Lock rug pads is made of natural rubber, and this is the part that sits on the floor, gripping it tightly to prevent rug movement.
-
What is the best pad for a 9' x 12' rug on a hardwood floor?
Contour Lock or Superior Lock would be perfect for your rug. These are dual purpose felt and natural rubber pads that provide grip and cushioning. The only difference between them is that Contour Lock is 1/8" thick while Superior Lock comes in three different thicknesses.

I am thinking about the Superior Lock pad for an 8' x 10' wool rug that will receive a lot of traffic. It will be in the living room and I am concerned about tripping. Also, will the rubber backing and felt give a soft and supportive feeling?
If you are concerned about tripping I suggest the 1/4" thick Superior Lock pad. If that seems too thick for you take a look at our Contour Lock pad which is also felt and rubber but only 1/8" thick. Both provide gripping and comfort but remember the thicker the pad the plusher the feel.
