Soundproof Rug Pads
Do Rug Pads Help With Noise?
Rug pads can help with noise, but it depends on the pad. A soundproof rug pad has special qualities with thickness, density, and material to provide the most sound absorbing mat possible.
Soundproof pads don’t provide the highest level of soundproofing between floors (special soundproof flooring takes that crown), but they do provide a cost effective way to add some soundproofing.
Soundproofing Experts from The Strategist Recommend Our Eco Plush Rug Pad to Soundproof a Room!
Benefits of a Soundproof Rug Pad
A soundproof rug pad helps reduce floor noise and ambient noise while improving overall acoustics in your home or apartment. We offer three pads that can greatly reduce overall floor noise in your home while keeping neighboring noise out.
Soundproofing Between Floors |
Hearing people upstairs stomping around or hearing every word from one floor down can get ridiculously annoying. Not to mention the "click-clack" of heels on the hard floor.
Whether you have a wood floor, tile, or anything in between, adding a thick rug and thick rug pad on the floor can help with soundproofing between floors so noise doesn’t travel as easily. It won't get you 100% soundproof flooring, but the cushioned rug pad does add an extra layer of sound absorption |
Reduces Overall Ambient Noise |
Just like adding furniture and cushions to your rooms reduces the amount of noise bouncing around, a thick rug pad does the same. Our sound dampening rug pads act as a soundproof underlayment for your rug that helps keep ambient noise from echoing around the house. |
A Non-Permanent Way to Soundproof Apartment Floor |
If you're renting an apartment, you probably can't go through a big and expensive floor soundproofing project with acoustic underlayment or even a new carpet underlay.
That’s where a sound absorbing rug pad comes in. Soundproofing rug pads are less expensive and easy to soundproof apartment floor without needing any changes to the actual apartment. |
Works as Carpeted Floor and Hardwood Floor Noise Reduction |
Whether your place has carpet, vinyl flooring, hardwood floor, or even cork tiles, we can provide a soundproofing rug pad that is safe for your floor. No big expensive flooring changes. Your carpet (and current carpet padding) can stay exactly the same – just put the new cushioned rug pad on top for that extra layer of soundproofing. |
Floor Insulation |
Along with sound insulation between floors, the thick padding provides some heat insulation as well for more cozy flooring. |
Comfortable Thick Padding |
The thickness of a noise reduction rug pad also provides lots of cushion under your rug for a super comfortable and soft floor. |
USA Made Noise Canceling Rug Pad |
All our noise cancelling pads are made here in the USA so we can ensure quality for every single noise cancelling rug pad. |
The Best Soundproofing Rug Pads By Rug Size
Choosing the best soundproofing rug pad primarily depends on your rug size and where the rug will be in your house. For small rugs in high traffic areas, you’ll need noise reducing pads with a grippy backing such as natural rubber. To get a large sound proof area rug, you won’t need to worry as much about slip resistance and can get a thicker pad for better area rug sound absorption.
Which rug pad is the best for noise reduction? We with any rug that needs a non slip rug pad,
The Best Soundproof Rug Pad for Small Rugs and Runners
With pads smaller than 8x10 or in very high traffic areas such as hallways and entryways, we recommend the Superior Lock rug pad because it has non slip grip with a thick layer of felt padding for sound reduction.
Superior Lock Non Slip Rug Pad
Superior Lock is the best non slip rug pad for noise reduction. The felt and rubber rug pad combines a thick layer of felt with a non slip natural rubber backing that helps to grip your floor without sticking to it. It's available in two thicknesses (1/4" and 7/16”), but we recommend going with 7/16" thickness to maximize noise reduction.

The "Sound of Silence"
Since we have an energetic toddler, I needed pads that would provide significant sound dampening and with these pads you can barely detect the footsteps anymore. They even absorb the creakiness of our hard wood floors. Highly recommended!
— Kristin R.
The Best Rug Pad for Soundproofing Area Rugs (8x10 or Larger)
With larger rugs that don't need a non slip pad, we recommend our Eco Plush and Cloud Comfort rug pads. Cloud Comfort works slightly better than Eco Plush for soundproofing but is also priced higher.
Eco Plush Felt Rug Pad
Eco Plush is made with 100% heat-pressed felt fibers. It creates a dense buffer between your rugs and floors, adding plush comfort under your rugs. Since Eco Plush doesn’t use any natural rubber it isn’t a non slip rug pad, so it’s best for larger area rugs that have furniture to anchor them.
Eco Plush comes in three different thicknesses, 1/4", 3/8", and 1/2", but we recommend the 1/2" thickness to fully maximize noise reduction from foot traffic.

Better Than Promised
Wow, what a difference! Reduced noise and created warmth. Feels great barefoot too!
— Sarah K
Cloud Comfort Memory Foam Soundproofing Rug Pad
Cloud Comfort is our best rug pad for soundproofing floors with larger rugs (8x10 or larger). Cloud Comfort is for the comfort connoisseur and it's great for putting a damper on unwanted noise.
It's made from 100% visco elastic memory foam, the same found in quality mattresses, for the same memory foam feel underneath your rugs. The dense padding also provides maximum noise absorption for a thick barrier between floors. The pad comes in 1/4" thick and 7/16” thick, but for the best sound dampening rug, go with the thicker 7/16”.

Love this Pad, Ordering More this Week!
Purchased for my two bedrooms in my Boston apartment, mostly to dampen the noise heard downstairs from walking. Well, they are SO comfy on the feet as well, not to mention the sound dampening. Highly recommend for larger rugs (as described).

Tips for Soundproofing Hardwood Floors
Older hardwood floors can be thin and the boards often creak which makes even more noise. This makes soundproofing hardwood floors that much more of a challenge.
We can’t say soundproof floor mats will completely solve creaky floorboards or thin floors, but our noise reduction pads can definitely help to give you some peace and quiet in your home. All of our sound proofing rug pads are safe with all hardwood floors and finishes as well as most other floor types so you don’t have to worry about the pads damaging your flooring.
How to Soundproof a Room
There are many different ways to help soundproof a room aside from soundproofing your floors with a soundproof rug pad. There's acoustic underlay you can add under your carpet or foam acoustic panels you can put on your walls for even more noise absorbing padding.

For an L-shape rug, it would be two separate pads that you would add together to get your desired size.
-
I want to buy a pool table which can be noisy so I'd like an area rug/pad to absorb some of the sounds. I will probably cut through both layers for the legs so they don't interfere with leveling. Therefore, would a pad still reduce noise effectively?
The answer to your question is yes and I've got two suggestions for you. They are the Eco Plush pad and the Superior Lock pad. Both have excellent soundproofing that will absorb some of the noise of the balls and the table. Eco Plush is a 100% all felt pad while Superior Lock is a felt and rubber pad. Of the two, I would recommend Eco Plush for your needs because it is denser.
