Getting a Non Slip Cushioned Rug Pad for Small Rugs and Runners
If you have small rugs or runners in high traffic areas that you want an under rug cushion for, there’s no other way around it: you need a non slip cushioned pad.

Awesome Cushioned Pads for hard floors and babies
I purchased the thick version of this rug pad earlier this year after moving to a home with laminate hardwood flooring. What Thickness Do You Really Need?
The best thickness for your rug pad will depend on the size and thickness of your rug and where the rug will be in your house. The key considerations you’ll want to think about are avoiding tripping hazards, door clearance, and comfort.
The thicker the pad, the more comfortable your rug will be to walk and sit on. And although that may make for a comfy seat, it can also cause a few issues that will become annoying.
The extra height that comes with all that cozy cushioning can also cause an issue with tripping or stop doors from opening. So it’s important to get the right balance of cushioning and practicality for your rug.
So, What Thickness Is Best for a Thick Rug?
Thick rugs may not need as thick of a rug pad because it already has cushioning from the rug itself. Plus, adding too much more thickness can make the rug come up too high.
If you still want a cushioned pad, we recommend a pad that’s 1/4-inch thick or thinner which will add some subtle cushion, but won’t add too much extra height. Our three 1/4-inch thick pads to choose from are the Cloud Comfort memory foam pad, Eco Plush felt pad, and Superior Lock felt and natural rubber pad.
If the rug needs door clearance, we recommend a thinner pad such as our 1/16-inch thick RugPro pad or 1/8-thick Nature’s Grip pad.

If you have a thin, lightweight rug such as a cotton or flatweave rug, you’ll want to combine thickness with non slip grip. No matter how large, these types of rugs can often wrinkle, slip, or bunch up which is why some grip is essential.
For the most comfort and padding, the best rug pad for a thin rug would be our 7/16” thick Superior Lock rug pad. Since this pad combines both natural rubber and recycled felt, you get plush cushioning with maximum grip.

I have a 5' x 7' 100% polyester quality area rug on a bedroom’s hardwood floor. Is the dual purpose Superior Lock a good non-slip pad that also cushions? I want the rug to be comfortable when I'm sitting on the floor. Will 1/4" thickness be enough?
Yes, Superior Lock will work well for you. In addition to its strong grip, you will find the thick layer of cushioned support very comfortable when sitting on your rug. The 1/4" thickness will be sufficient.

My 8' x 10' rug is partially covered by a couch and a coffee table. It's worn and hard in areas where the dog sleeps. I need a pad for the entire thing or just the part uncovered by the couch. Basically, I want cushioning for my dog. Any ideas?
If the rug is anchored by furniture I would suggest an extra thick rug pad, like our Eco Plush rug pad which is made of 100% heat-pressed felt and is a great pad for cushioning. With regards to just cushioning a part of your rug, I'm not sure how to go about that.

Will Cloud Comfort work for my rug? I have a 4' x 4' shag rug with a 1" pile that will go on a hardwood floor. The rug is for a reading corner so we will be sitting on it a lot and I want something to provide a lot of cushion.
Cloud Comfort is a great pad, but it is not non-slip which is what I think you will need. I would take a look at our Superior Lock felt and natural rubber pad. This pad comes in three different thickness and will give you the cushioning you want as well as non-slip traction.

Your Superior Lock rug pad looks plush and just what I need. If the carpeting is also plush, will it work?
While it will work, we really only recommend one pad for wall-to-wall carpet and that is Carpet Lock. It is 7/16" thick which is the same as the thickest Superior Lock pad. So it provides a plush feel and luxurious comfort as well as a powerful grip that stops rugs from moving.

Superior Lock 1/3" or 7/16" thicknesses are going to give you the most cushioning. This felt and natural rubber pad will also provide your rug with some long-term protection and it is safe for your floor type. However, I do recommend you contact the manufacturer for guidelines on what is safe to use on their hardwood.

Cloud Comfort is a memory foam pad and Eco Plush is a 100% all felt pad. With the former, you get a glorious soft sinking feeling while the latter is a little stiffer. Cloud Comfort is our softest pad but your rug is too small for it. This pad is usually meant for larger rugs that don’t need protection from slipping. It is not non-slip and so there could be some issues with your rug moving. An alternative is Superior Lock 7/16". This pad is pretty soft so would also be good for kids playing on the floor. And it has a firm gripping attribute that keeps rugs in place.
