5 x 8 Rug Pads
Finding the Right 5 x 8 Rug Pad
This is the guide you’ve been waiting for.
5 x 8 area rugs are one of those tricky in-betweener sizes: They aren’t quite a large area rug like a 9x12 area rug that stay in place. But they also aren’t small 3x5 throw rugs that move everywhere and do best with a low profile pad.
So how do you pad these medium rugs?
With a rug pad that has a mix of cushion and grip. For a 5x8 area rug, we usually recommend one of our rug pads that combine felt and natural rubber.
However, within this range, you’ve got a few different options depending on your personal preference, specific rug type, and living space. The best 5x8 area rug pad for your rug will depend on the rug’s weight and thickness. For example, your 5x8 jute rug may need a different pad than your 5x8 shag rug — but that’s where we come in to help you out!

The Best Rug Padding for Thin 5x8 Rugs in a High Traffic Area
You need a 5x8 non slip rug pad.
Photo from verified buyer of the Nature’s Grip rug pad Lisa T. “These are perfect for the rag rugs in front of our doors - low profile, excellent grip. Very fast shipping too.”
For thin, light-weight 8 x 5 rugs like flatweaves, cotton rugs, or rag rugs, you want a strong-gripping pad to keep the rug in place. Add in putting the rug in a high traffic area like a living room, kitchen, or entryway? Then you absolutely need some serious gripping power.
Our most common rug pad recommendation for this scenario is our RugPro rug pad. This pad is low profile, works especially well in high traffic areas, and keeps your rugs flush with the floor — no bulky under pad that can get in the way of doors. Plus, this pad’s solid design offers maximum floor coverage so you get even more floor protection and it keeps dirt from building up under the rug.
The pad is just 1/16” thick, so it doesn’t offer much extra cushioning for thin rugs, but the felt and rubber rug pad is the MVP when it comes non slip grip.
A few other options that also work well in high traffic areas include our Nature’s Grip, Anchor Grip, and Super Lock Natural rug pads. All three of these pads are 1/8" thick, so they’re a little thicker than the RugPro, but offer slightly more cushion AND still have all-star quality grip. To learn more about these pads, check out our non-slip collection.

The Best 5x8 Rug Pad for More Cushioning
You want a thick rug pad.
If you’d like a bit of cushion under your feet when you walk on your 5x8 rugs, but still need to keep a relatively low profile, you’ll want to check out the Contour Lock.
This 1/8 inch-thick felt and rubber number offers reliable gripping power and moderate levels of cushioning without the bulk. The result? A comfy area rug pad for small and medium sized rugs without the potential tripping hazard — great for thicker rugs including sisal or jute rugs.
Wait! There’s more!
Rugs (especially thick ones like sisal or jute) often have rough backings that can scratch up your nice floors over time. However, with this pad’s solid design you keep your floors completely safe from those rough backings.

Feeling a little extra?
If you’re the type of person who wants all the luxuries when it comes to your home, we like your style! And we have the perfect rug pad for you 😉.
Our Superior Lock rug pad is our most comfortable non slip pad available. We hit all the stops with this one. Made with thick, dense felt and reinforced natural rubber, Superior Lock offers unyielding, non-slip traction with thick, cushioned support.
The needle-punched felt surface naturally clings to the bottom of rugs to anchor the rug down without harming the rug in any way. At the same time, the thick padding gives you extra softness and comfort while also supporting the rug. We’ve got this pad in two different thicknesses. 1/4-inch for those who want padding but not too much and 7/16-inch for those who want as much as they can get.

Putting 5x8 Area Rugs on Your Carpet?
You’re gonna need a special rug pad for that. (We have it)
If you’re putting a rug on carpet, don’t just throw it on there willy nilly — otherwise you’re asking for wrinkling, bunching, and moving!
Instead, check out our Carpet Lock rug pad. We’ve specifically designed this pad to keep rugs lying flat, wrinkle free, and in the right place on your wall to wall carpeting.
The felt backing (floor-side) has a unique texture to fasten to your carpet fibers (like velcro but without pulling the fibers) while the top natural rubber surface keeps your rug on the pad. This pad is around 7/16” thick, so you get some serious added comfort too.

Customer Questions & Answers
-
I am looking for some grip for my two small and plush area rugs that are on a hardwood floor. However, the pads I used to put under cheaper rugs made their edges and corners curl up. Will your pads do that to my rugs?
This won't be a problem at all with our pads. I suggest you look at Anchor Grip and Contour Lock, two of our thin pads.
-
I'm loose laying a piece of carpet over hardwood in a walk-in closet. The carpet is dense cut pile but pretty low profile. I would like some insulation as the floor is over an unheated garage. Is Anchor Grip or Superior Lock best for my situation?
I would go with the Superior Lock 1/4" over the Anchor Grip. In addition to its grip, this long-lasting felt and natural rubber pad has cushioned support that will provide a comfortable layer of insulation. It will also protect your floor if the carpet's backing degrades over time.
-
What rug pad do you recommend for a 5x8 cotton rug that sits on top of a wood floor?
The best pad for your rug is the Superior Lock 1/3" which sticks firmly to floors.
-
What is the best pad for Beni Ourain thick wool rugs that are 5' x 8' and 10' x 8'? They will be going on either a hardwood floor or a marble tiled floor.
For strong gripping, cushioning and floor and rug protection I would say either the Contour Lock or the Superior Lock rug pads.
-
Is the SpillTech pad too thick for a 5' x 8' thin wool kilim-style dining room rug, and will it have enough grip? We bought a Contour Lock pad for the last dining room rug and really like it.
The SpillTech pad would be too small for your needs. Contour Lock is a perfect choice for your rug.
-
What thickness should a pad be for a 5ft x 8ft thin oriental area rug on a hardwood floor that sees high traffic? I want the carpet to feel plush and soft and was looking at the 1/2" felt pad.
My recommendation is 1/8" or thinner. You will get this with the Anchor Grip pad, which is 1/8" or the RugPro, which is 1/16". Both are ideal for high traffic areas. I wouldn't go with the 1/2" felt pad, only because it isn't non-slip and you don't want your rug to move around. For a plusher feel, look at the Superior Lock, either 1/3" or 7/16". This felt and rubber pad will give you a lot of comfort underfoot and won't slip or slide.
-
Would the Cloud Comfort rug pad slip if placed under a 5ft x 8ft rug in a kid's room?
Yes, this pad would slip. Cloud Comfort is really for larger area rugs that do not require protection against slipping.
-
What is the best rug pad for a 5' x 8' rug on a radiant heated slate floor?
Contour Lock or Superior Lock will work perfectly for you. These felt and natural rubber pads are unaffected by the changing temperatures that are produced by radiant heated floors. So, they will not break down.
-
Why does your website say you will cut 1" all around, but the dimensions show you take off 2"? Also, I need a pad under a dining room table and chairs and one for a 5’ x 8’ rug under a coffee table. Both rugs are thin and I’d like grip and cushioning.
With regards to the size of our rug pads, we do take 1" off all four sides which equals 2" off each dimension: length (top and bottom) and width (left and right). For your pads, I suggest Contour Lock or RugPro for the dining room and Contour Lock for the 5' x 8' rug. Both of these low profile felt and natural rubber pads will give you the strong grip you need and some cushioning.
-
Do I enter the exact rug size, and you will make a pad that is a bit smaller? How much smaller for a rug that is approximately 5' by 8'? Also, what pads do you recommend for a handmade wool rug on a hardwood floor, and what are their thicknesses?
To answer the first question, yes, just enter your exact rug dimensions and we will trim 1" off all four sides. So, for a 5' x 8' rug that pad would come out at 4'10" x 7'10". Secondly, I suggest a felt and rubber pad such as Contour Lock or Superior Lock. Contour Lock is 1/8" thick while Superior Lock comes in 1/4 and 7/16" thicknesses.
-
I have a 5x8 polypropylene rug that will go on a painted concrete porch and may be exposed to rain. Which pad is best in this situation? If rain isn't an issue what works for painted concrete? Would Super Lock Natural be okay?
We don't carry outdoor pads and don’t recommend any of our products for outdoor use because of the elements. If you are just looking for a recommendation for painted concrete, I would suggest something like Superior Lock or Contour Lock, two excellent felt and natural rubber pads that provide gripping and cushioning. I wouldn't go with Super Lock Natural because of the size of your rug. This pad is often bought by customers for their runners.
-
Will the Superior Lock 1/4" thickness work well for a 5' x 8' wool rug that is 1/2" thick? It will be on a hardwood floor.
Yes, it will. This felt and rubber pad offers cushioning and exceptional gripping as well as long-term protection for your rug and hardwood floor.
-
I have a 5' x 8' braided denim rag rug on my parquet flooring. However, it isn't very soft and I want to extend the rug life and protect the floor. If I use a felt pad, will it slip? I would prefer to use a felt pad rather than felt and rubber.
For your size rug, I would recommend a non-slip pad. I acknowledge your concern about rubber, but we only use natural rubber which is safe for all types of floor. However, I think the first thing you should do is contact your floor's manufacturer to ask for their guidelines on what can and cannot be used on your parquet flooring.
-
I have a 5x8 all wool rug. Is that considered small? I want to get the Eco Plush pad, but I'm concerned about slipping. The rug and pad will be going on a hardwood floor.
Yes, that pad is considered small and so I recommend something with an excellent gripping attribute. Please, take a look at our Superior Lock and Contour Lock non-slip pads. These felt and natural rubber pads will also give you a good level of cushioned comfort.
