Your Guide to 5x7 Rug Pads
Everything you need to know about getting a 5x7 rug pad.
5x7 area rugs are one of those tricky in-betweener sizes: They aren’t quite large rugs like a 9x12 area rug that stay put on their own. But they also aren’t your small 3x5 throw rugs where extra cushion may not matter.
So how do you pad this medium-sized 5 by 7 rug?
With a rug pad that has a mix of cushion and grip. That means your best option for 5 x 7 area rugs will likely be a rug pad that combines the soft cushioning of felt with the strong grip of natural rubber.
Within this range, you’ve got a few different options and the best one for your 5x7 area rugs will depend on the weight and thickness of the rugs. Your 5x7 jute rug will likely need a different rug pad than your 5x7 shag area rug — but that’s where we come in!
Let’s help you get the best rug pad for your needs.

“No movement whatsoever”
Recently purchased the anchor grips to place under two hallway runners and one small 5x7. After trying two other products previously, I am elated to say these are the only ones that work! No movement whatsoever in spite of high traffic and two animals. Cut perfectly to size. Very pleased with my purchase.

The Best Rug Padding for Thin 5x7 Rugs in a High Traffic Area
For thinner, lighter-weight 5x7 rugs like flatweaves or cotton rugs, you want a strong-gripping pad to keep that sucker in place. Especially if that rug is in a high traffic area like a living room, kitchen, or entryway, you’ve probably dealt with that light-weight rug moving all over the place.
Our most common recommendation in this scenario is our RugPro rug pad. It’s low profile, works especially well in high traffic areas, and keeps your rugs flush with the floor — no bulky under pad that can get in the way of doors. Plus, this pad’s solid design offers more floor coverage than waffle-style pads so you get even more floor protection and it keeps dirt from building up under the rug.
The pad is a mere 1/16” thick, so it doesn’t offer much extra cushioning for thin rugs, but the felt and rubber rug pad is the MVP when it comes to being a non slip pad.

Best rug pad!
Purchase two of these rug pads. They don't move, best purchase ever! I have a very exuberant 95 lb dog that loves to play with the adult kids and the rugs stay in place.

The Best 5x7 Carpet Pad for Added Cushioning with 5 by 7 Rugs
If you’d like a bit of cushion under your 5x7 rugs (say you’re putting it in a bedroom or on seriously hard surface floors) but still need to keep a relatively low profile, you’ll want to check out the Contour Lock.
This 1/8 inch-thick felt and rubber number offers great rug gripper and moderate levels of cushioning without the bulk. That means a nice comfy area rug pad without the potential tripping hazard — great for thicker rugs including sisal or jute rugs.
But that’s not all!
Rugs (especially thick ones like sisal or jute) often have rough backings, so this pad’s slightly thicker solid design not only helps keep rugs clean, but fully protects floors from scratches.

Feeling like even more cushioning?
Then we have the perfect thick rug pad for you too!
For the most cushioned non slip rug pad we have, you need to check out our Superior Lock rug pad. Made with more felt and a gentle heat-pressing technique to combine the felt with reinforced natural rubber, Superior Lock offers unyielding, non-slip traction with thick, cushioned support.
The needle-punched felt surface naturally clings to the bottom of rugs to anchor the rug down and give it the support it needs to last longer. At the same time, the padding gives you extra softness and comfort. We’ve got this pad in two different thicknesses: 1/4-inch and 7/16-inch.

Putting a 5x7 Rug on Carpet?
We know exactly what you need.
If you’re putting a rug on carpet, don’t just plop it on there — otherwise you’re in store for some wrinkling, bunching, and moving!
You need to check out our Carpet Lock rug pad. We’ve specially designed this pad to keep rugs lying flat, wrinkle free, and in the right place on your wall to wall carpeting.
How is it specially designed?
The felt backing has a unique texture to fasten to your carpet fibers (without damaging them) while the top natural rubber surface keeps your rug on the pad. The pad is around 7/16” thick, so get ready for some serious comfort too.

Customer Questions & Answers

I'm trying to decide between Superior Lock and your memory foam pad for my 5' x 7' rug. I want comfort, but I'm also concerned about the rug sliding around. Currently, I have furniture holding down the edges.
I would say the strong grip and cushioned comfort of Superior Lock is what you need. Your rug will definitely stay in place with this pad. The Cloud Comfort pad is really for larger area rugs and yours is on the smaller side so there might be some issues with sliding.
-
I have a 5x7 Dhurrie rug on top of a flat weave wall-to-wall carpeting. Do you have a pad that will keep it from moving around and bunching up?
Our Superior-Lock is well-suited for your purposes. It anchors the rug firmly to the floor while providing a thick layer of cushioned support. This pad is manufactured in the USA, is eco-friendly, odor-free and designed to prevent bunching, creeping, and curling at corners.
-
We have 5' x 7' oriental rugs on carpet that never used to slip until we replaced the carpet. Now they slide up to 6" per day depending on traffic. We can’t anchor them with furniture and so we want to know how to stop the movement.
The only pad we recommend for carpet is Carpet Lock. This felt and natural rubber pad does a fantastic job of preventing shifting and other types of movement when rugs are being walked on.
-
What rug pad do you recommend for a 5x7 wool rug with backing that's to go on a hardwood floor?
I've got two great options for you. Either Contour Lock or Superior Lock. Both of these recycled felt and natural rubber pads have strong and reliable gripping that will put a stop to annoying rug movements such as slipping and sliding. They will also protect your floor from damage and extend the lifespan of your rug.

I want to reduce noise travelling from the third floor of my house to the second floor. In terms of noise reduction, I'm wondering how your products are better than something I can pick up at Lowe's. My rug is 5 by 7.
Our rug pads are denser, and some are also non-slip. This makes them particularly good for reducing noise. Pads carried by Lowe's aren't very good for a number of reasons. Firstly, they are rebond pads and so there is no grip and your size rug is definitely going to slip unless there is a non-slip pad underneath it. Secondly, they are approximately 3/8" thick, and you are going to want something denser to cancel out the noise. Therefore, I recommend our 7/16" thick Superior Lock felt and natural rubber pad. I usually recommend this pad to customers who need soundproofing and grip. I've never had a complaint about it.
-
I am looking for a pad to stop a 5' x 7' rug from making ridges while on top of carpeting. What have you got?
I suggest our Carpet Lock rug pad which is the only one we recommend for rugs on carpet. This felt and natural rubber pad is 7/16" thick and designed to keep rugs lying flat and fixed in their place.
-
My 5ft x 7ft and 8ft x 10ft rugs sit on vinyl plank floors and need pads. Both will have furniture on top so a non-slip pad isn’t required. Previously, my floors were stained by rubber mats and I want to avoid this from happening again. Recommendations?
I would recommend Anchor Grip for the smaller size rug and Eco Plush or Anchor Grip for the larger size. Anchor Grip is a non-slip pad but if you are confident that your rug will not move then Eco Plush will be just fine. Neither of these pads will harm your floor in any way. Eco Plush is a 100% heat-pressed felt pad while Anchor Grip is a soybean oil-based polymer blend.
-
I have a 5x7 rug on a laminate floor. It is not anchored by furniture. I’m looking at the non-slip and cushion pad at 1/4" thick. Do you think this thickness will present a trip hazard? To ensure the correct fit do I just enter the exact rug size?
The Superior Lock 1/4" is perfect for you. It will provide lots of grip and some cushioning and won't bulk up the rug. So you don't need to worry about tripping. With regards to ensuring the correct fit, yes, just enter your rug's dimensions and we'll custom cut the perfect fitting pad for you for free.
-
I have a 5x7 rug on a hardwood floor that has a tung oil finish. I am trying to decide between Super Lock Natural and Contour Lock. Which is the safest for hardwood floors?
Our pads are safe for all floors and finishes but I suggest you first contact your floor manufacturer and ask them for their guidelines on what is safe for your floor.
-
I'd like to order rug pads for 5' x 7' area rugs in bedrooms and a living room with vinyl planking. I've heard conflicting information about which is the right rug pad material. Please recommend the best material and options from your web site. Thank you!
Very often customers with a similar floor type to yours go for our Anchor Grip pad which is a soybean oil-based polymer blend that is safe for all hardwood floors and finishes. However, please do check with your flooring manufacturer for their specific guidelines.
-
I have a 5' x 7' rug on wall-to-wall carpeting. A pedestal table and four 'rolling' chairs are on top of the rug, but there is bunching and wrinkling. Will your Carpet Lock pad work well with this rug?
Yes, it should be fine and will ensure your rug remains flat and wrinkle free. The Carpet Lock felt and natural rubber pad was specifically designed to keep rugs secure on wall-to-wall carpeting.
-
What rug pad would work best under a 5x7 Indian hand-woven rug? I would like it to have some grip in addition to cushion since it's pretty thin. I’ve been looking at Contour Lock, Superior Lock, and Anchor Grip. This rug is for our bedroom.
I think you could go with any of these especially as they are low profile. My specific recommendation would be Superior Lock 1/4" or Contour Lock which is 1/8" thick. They will give you cushioned comfort and stability. You mentioned that there isn’t a lot of foot traffic but I would still go with a pad with a gripping attribute.
-
I am looking to purchase the Contour Lock rug pad. I like and appreciate the option to customize it, but what size do I buy for my 5' x 7' rug? Do I get something smaller or do I get the exact same size? I'd prefer not to cut the rug pad.
When placing an order with us all you would have to do is enter your rug dimensions and we will cut the pad to fit. We would trim 2" from the length and width of the pad so that it isn't exposed when placed under your rug. If you do not want the pad trimmed you can leave us a special instruction not to custom cut it.
-
I am looking for pads for ten Persian rugs of variable sizes (roughly 5by7) to use on hardwood floors. They cannot have any rubber or latex due to my allergies. Do you have any options or suggestions?
The best choice would be Anchor Grip, a non-slip pad that contains no rubber or latex. It is safe to use on all hardwood floors and finishes.
-
I need a rug pad for a 5 feet x 7 feet cowhide on a hardwood floor. What do you suggest?
I recommend either Anchor Grip or RugPro. Both non-slip pads deliver maximum gripping power and are safe for hardwood floors.
-
I want a pad for a 5' x 7' rug on hardwood that’s anchored on two sides by furniture. I need some cushion but don’t know if I also need grip. I can’t decide between Eco Plush 3/8" or 1/2" or Superior Lock 7/16". I don’t want the rug elevated. Suggestions?
With your rug size, I suggest you purchase a non-slip pad such as Superior Lock. This pad is also good for cushioning. If you are concerned about possibly creating a tripping hazard, I would consider the 1/4" thickness.
