100% Felt Rug Pads
Why Use a Felt Rug Pad
Felt rug pads offer a dense, comfortable layer of cushion and insulation for larger rugs that don’t need a non-slip pad. Our felt rug pads are available in three different thicknesses: 1/4", 3/8", and 1/2", so you can choose how much cushioning you want.
Benefits of Felt Rug Pads
When it comes to choosing the best cushioned rug pad material for your rug needs, it's important to consider all the benefits of different rug padding so you can find the right rug pad. While you'll get a quality rug pad with all our rug pad options, a cushioned felt rug pad has certain benefits (and drawbacks) you'll want to consider.
The best time to consider a 100% felt rug pad? If you want a thick area rug pad for a larger rug. Here's why.
Floor Protection |
A felted rug pad protects floors from dents and scratches, acts as rug protectors for furniture legs, and prevents abrasions from rough rug backings.
Certain rug types, especially handmade and jute, can scratch floors so you should always pair them with a felt rug pad. |
Thick Floor Padding |
Our thick felt pads offer a layer of thick floor padding under your rug for extra comfort while sitting or walking on the rug. |
Rug Longevity |
Felt rug pads will help prolong your rug's life. How? The rug padding alleviates stress from foot traffic and everyday wear. It also serves as a protective buffer from dirt–the number one cause of rug degradation. |
Insulating Rug Pad |
Our Eco Plush pad is a great insulating rug pad to help keep heat in your house during cold winter months and make cold floors feel nicer. |
Soundproofing Floors |
Our thick felt pads act as a dense sound barrier to mute floor noise. This is great for multistory homes and apartments. |
Eco-Friendly |
All our felt rug pads use recycled synthetic fibers from new unused carpet fibers and yarn that go easy on your hard floor and rug fibers, and don't give off toxins. Our Eco Plush rug pad line uses heat-pressed felt without any chemicals or adhesives so they are safe and don't give off any unpleasant odors. |
Is Felt Okay With All Rug Sizes?
While there isn’t any risk of felt damaging your floors or rug, certain smaller rug sizes may work best with one of our felt and natural rubber pads instead of 100% felt to get slip resistance for the rug. The felt and natural rubber pads can provide a thick non slip rug pad with grip and comfort.
Why You Shouldn’t Use a 100% Felt Rug Pad for Small and Runner Rugs (4x6 Rugs and Smaller)
If you have a smaller rug or runner in a high-traffic area, getting a non slip pad should be one of your primary concerns and our 100% felt pad doesn’t offer any floor grip.
So what should you get instead?
If you want a rug pad that combines non slip qualities and cushion, we recommend a felt and natural rubber rug pad. This type of pad is safe for most hard surface flooring, will grip your floor without sticking to it, and uses natural fiber. We don't use synthetic rubber, so you know you'll get a quality rug pad that won't damage floors such as tile floors or new hardwood floors.
Can You Get a Felted Rug Pad for Medium Rugs (4x6 - 7x10 Rugs)
With medium area rugs, we still generally recommend using a natural rubber and felt area rug pad for the non slip qualities. We generally only recommend using our 100% felt pads with 8 x 10 rugs or larger.
However, if you have a particularly heavy and thick rug that’s not in a high traffic area and/or has heavy furniture anchoring it, then felt padding may be an option to consider. If you do have a thick rug that doesn’t need any grip, then our thinnest thickness (1/4") of our Eco Plush pad might be a good fit.
The Best Felt Pad for Large Area Rugs (8x10, 8x11, 9x12)
These larger rugs often do not need non slip grip in which case we highly recommend our Eco Plush pads. We offer three different thicknesses for the Eco Plush, 1/4", 3/8", and 1/2" and any of these would work with this size rug.
All thicknesses use high density felt (the 1/2" pad has 40 ounces of felt per square yard) that offers a breathable layer between the rug and floor. The extra thick rug pad will be best if you want lots of padding under your rug.

“Entire Transaction Was Flawless”
I ordered the Eco Plush 1/2" pad to go with a new carpet for our dining room. The entire transaction was flawless. Easy ordering was easy and shipping was lightning fast. I ordered on a Thursday and had it that Saturday evening. The pad is very good quality, no odor or jagged edges. Save yourself the hassle from ordering from the big box stores and let Rugpadusa do the cutting. A+.

BUY THE ECO PLUSH RUG PAD
The Best Felt Area Rug Pad for Extra Large and Oversize Area Rugs (10x13, 10x14, 12x15)
With extra large and oversize area rugs, you want to maximize comfort and padding with thick pads under your rug. Since extra large rugs generally have furniture to anchor them and are heavy enough to stay put on their own, you shouldn’t have to worry about getting a non slip pad meaning our Eco Plush thick rug pads are all excellent choices.
For the most luxurious experience with a felt pad, we’d recommend our 1/2"-thick felt pad because it will provide the most amount of cushion at a budget-friendly price. The heat-pressed pad has 40 ounces of felt per square yard so it provides plenty of cushion and support.
★★★★★

We bought the 1/2" for a large (9'x12') inexpensive rug. It makes the rug feel nicer than it truly is. Highly recommend this felt rug pad!

What Felt Thickness Should I Get for My Rug Pad?
When it comes to felt thickness for your rug pad, it will largely depend on your own personal preference with how much cushion you want for your rug versus how high the rug will sit above the floor.
With thicker felt padding, you’ll get more cushion and comfort, but run a higher risk of the pad causing a tripping hazard or not fitting under doors.
With thin felt pads, your rug won’t go up as high, but you’ll get less cushion.
The Best Felt Padding Thickness for a Thick Rug
For thick, plush rugs with a thicker pile (3/4 inches thick or more), we’d recommend a lower profile rug pad around 1/4"- thick or thinner so the rug doesn’t go overboard with thickness.
If it’s for a large area rug, go with our Eco Plush 1/4". It will provide enough padding to give you moderate cushion and top-notch floor protection without raising your rug too high.
★★★★★
Plush Pad, Really Nice
The pad is very nice, thick and soft. I bought the 1/4" thick pad and it feels much more cushy under the area rug then I thought. I'm pleasantly surprised since its only 1/4" thick. I will purchase another one once I find another rug I like.

The Best Rug Pad Thickness for a Thin Rug
For thin or medium thickness large rugs, our thick or extra thick felt rug pads will make your rugs feel extra cushy and luxurious. If you’re looking for maximum padding and comfort, our 1/2" thickness is best. If you want moderate cushioning but still a lower profile, our 3/8" thickness is best.
Are Felt Rug Pads Safe for All Floor Types?
Yes. Our felt rug pads are one of our safest rug pad options and are completely safe for all flooring types including hardwood, vinyl, laminate, tile, and radiant heat. The felt is non-toxic, breathable, colorfast, and chemical-free, so you don’t have to worry about common issues that can come from cheap plastic or PVC rug pads.
As with all our rug pads, if you are particularly concerned about what type of pad is best for your floor, we recommend checking with your flooring manufacturer to see what materials they recommend.
Is felt ok for vinyl planks?
Most vinyl floor manufacturers state you cannot use a pad made with rubber, latex or coco fiber. This can make finding the right rug pad difficult. Our felt carpet pads are 100% recycled felt made from unused carpet fibers and yarn. If you're looking for a low profile pad or need non-slip protection, we offer a vinyl pad called Anchor Grip. This vinyl pad is made with soybean oils & bio based fillers and does not contain any plasticizers or rubber/latex. We always suggest that you contract your floor manufacturer to see what materials will work best with your floor or finish.
Find a Different Thick Rug Pad
If felt doesn't seem like the right type of cushioned pad for you, but you have a large area rug that doesn't need non slip grip, our upgrade options for thick carpet padding would be one of our memory foam rug pads. These pads offer premium cushioning like what you would find in a mattress and are safe for most floors.
Customer Questions & Answers
-
Do I need a non-slip pad or a cushion pad?
Non-slip pads are best for high-traffic areas such as foyers and hallways, where thin rugs and runners are prone to slipping and sliding. Our cushion pads add a plush layer for large rugs already anchored by furniture, such as living and dining rooms. Should you decide you need a degree of both grip and cushioning, opt for a felt and rubber pad.
-
What rug pad is best for sisal rugs on hardwood floors, in front of doors?

However it is always best to contact your floor manufacturer to know which are the best materials for your particular floor.
-
Are your felt + rubber rug pads eco-friendly?
Yes. Felt and rubber rug pads are eco-friendly. Our felt is sourced from the top carpet manufacturers, and have low VOC emissions. During our manufacturing process the felt is then gently heat pressed to Natural Rubber rather than using traditional glues or adhesives.

-
What floor types can felt + rubber be used on?
Felt and rubber rug pads are safe for all standard floors and finishes, with the rare exception of some newer vinyl finished floors who recommend using a vinyl pad (Comfort Grip or Anchor Grip). Natural rubber is one of the safest materials you can use on your floors and we have never had any issues with floor staining or stripping.
-
What is the difference between your felt + rubber rug pads?
Both of our Felt + Rubber rug pads are Dual Purpose pads, designed to offer high levels of both cushioning and grip. Superior Lock is thicker than Contour Lock, thus offering more cushion if your looking to maximize comfort. Superior Lock also has a textured reinforced backing that offers slightly more grip than Contour Lock. Therefore, go with Contour Lock if you for a more flush look with moderate cushioning and Superior Lock if your looking to really maximize cushion.
-
I have a handmade Polish rug with a thick pile that is approximately 1". It lies in the middle of my living room, which is not a heavy traffic area and has a glass-topped table over it. What is the best rug pad for it?
I would go with the Eco Plush 1/4" pad for your rug. This eco-friendly rug pad is made of 100% heat-pressed felt and will cushion and protect your rug and floor for many years to come.
-
I need a large hardwood protector to go under a table. What do you suggest?

-
Is felt the only option for floors with an acrylic finish?
I would advise you to contact your flooring company and ask them for guidelines on what is safe for their floor.
-
How easily can you clean a felt pad following pet accidents?
We suggest blot cleaning with water and giving it a good vacuum every so often. Pet accidents can leave a smell so the faster you get to clean the pad after an animal has done its business the better you will be in the long run.
-
I recently had Cali bamboo flooring installed and am worried about scratching it with my rocker/recliner. Its base is a wood disc about 15" in diameter. Do you have a felt pad I could use to cover the base to avoid scratching the new bamboo?
Yes, we do. A great solution for your recliner problem is our Eco Plush pad which is made of 100% heat-pressed felt. I would choose the 1/2" thickness.
-
The warranty on the flooring we are installing says not to use rubber or foam-backed plastic mats for rugs, but to use vinyl padding. It also recommends using breathable material. Is Anchor Grip the only pad you would recommend given these warnings?
No, it's not. We do have another alternative and it is our Eco Plush pad. This is a 100% all felt pad but please do keep in mind that it is not non-slip. I would only suggest this pad for a rug that is 8' x 10' or larger.
-
We have very big rooms in a very old home and soundproofing is a big concern. We are probably going to buy 9’ x 12’ rugs to go on the hardwood floors so which rug pad would be best?
The best pad for soundproofing is the 7/16" Cloud Comfort. If you need grip as well then take a look at the 7/16" Superior Lock.
-
I have a very expensive, antique wool oriental rug, and was advised to choose a pad that will let it breathe. Is Cloud Comfort the most appropriate? Also, I am looking for the most soundproof pad because of a noise complaint from downstairs.
If you're looking for a breathable pad Eco Plush is the best option. It also has excellent soundproofing qualities.
-
I need a rug pad recommendation. What do you suggest for a 10' x 17' living room rug that will have heavy couches on it? The rug is fairly thin.
I would recommend the Eco Plush heat-pressed felt pad for that size rug. I feel that you don't need a pad with grip because it is so big. This pad will give you a lot of comfort and many years of rug and floor protection.
-
My 8'x 10' rug is exposed on three sides. I'm not concerned about slippage, because it is anchored by furniture. My concern is the wood floor. What options are there for a pad that will be a little plusher but that won't damage the hardwood floor?
You can go with our Eco Plush pad which is an all felt pad. It comes in three different thicknesses with 1/4" being the thinnest. This is a non-slip pad so I am only suggesting this if you are confident your rug will not move. If you need some grip, I suggest our Contour Lock felt and natural rubber pad. As long as your floor manufacturer allows natural rubber, this pad will work well for you. It is just 1/8" thick but also offers cushioning. As with all the products we carry, these two pads are safe for hardwood floors.
-
My rug is 10' x 12' and there won't be a lot of furniture on it, maybe the legs of a sofa, and possibly recliners, but the back of the rug is definitely the scratchy type of stuff. What do you recommend?
I suggest the Eco Plush all felt pad. But keep in mind that this is not a non-slip pad. Either way, the scratchy part of the rug will help it lay flat with the pad.
-
What does the Eco Plush rug pad do? I am looking for a rug pad to protect my hardwood floor from a 9' x 12' area rug.
Eco Plush is a 100% all felt pad that is predominately made to give cushioning to larger size rugs. This pad will also protect your floor for many years to come. It will do this in a number of ways. For example, by preventing your rug backing from scratching the wood and by preventing dirt and sand from slipping through the rug and reaching the floor.
-
We have a large carpet rug in our family room with a sectional around half of it. We want a pad with cushion for our kids to soften the blow if they bonk their heads playing. Do you suggest Superior Lock or Eco Plush?
Either one of those pads would be fine. Superior Lock is a felt and natural rubber pad, and I would suggest this if you need something with a powerful grip. If you don't, then go for the Eco plush all felt pad.
-
We have a 13.5' x 17.5' Kerman rug that will sit on a wood floor in a condomiuium. Which pad is best?
I would suggest Eco Plush, a 100% heat-pressed felt pad that will cushion and protect your floor for many years. Just know that you will receive this rug pad in two equal pieces to match the rug size. Our rolls only come in widths of 12'.
-
What kind of rug pad can I use on a radiant heated floor?
Either the 100% felt pads or the Superior Lock felt and natural rubber pad. All work well on heated floors and will not degrade because of the changing temperatures.
-
Do you think Eco Plush or Contour Lock is better for big areas? I have a 9' x 12' dining room rug that will be anchored by a table and chairs and a 10'x 14' 100% wool rug in the living room. Which pad should I choose?
That's entirely up to you because those pads will do a great job for both rugs. They will prevent rug movements such as slipping and wrinkling and provide cushioned comfort as well as long-term protection.
-
Would the Eco Plush felt pad be safe to use with vinyl flooring? We do not want to use a product that could stain or discolor our newly installed vinyl floor.
Yes, the Eco Plush rug pad is safe for vinyl flooring. It will not mark, stain or harm your floor.
-
I’m looking at the Eco Plush 3/8" felt pad for my wool rug which is a little stiff. Your custom cutting page says that 1" will be taken off all the way around. I’m concerned that the pad will still be seen and not be completely covered by my rug.
The inch border we cut off is fine for the thickness you are planning to purchase. If you go with a thicker pad we would then cut an inch and a half off. Either way, we will send you a pad that is a perfect fit for your rug.
-
In the past, we've had trouble with some pads sticking to heated tile floors. Does it make a difference if the heated floors are wood or tile?
It shouldn't do. We have a small number of pads that are suitable for radiant heated floors including Superior Lock. However, if you’re concerned about rubber, I would suggest Eco Plush, a 100% all felt pad. I only recommend this pad if your rug is larger than 8' x 10' and has some furniture to anchor down the rug and pad. That's because it is not a non-slip pad. Finally, none of our pads for heated floors will stick to them or break down.
-
What is the density of your Eco Plush 1/2" thick rug pad?
The density of this rug pad is 40 ounces of felt per square yard.
