Want to Avoid Damaging or Staining Your Bamboo Floor? Read This.
So, you have bamboo floors in your home? We dig your style!
Bamboo is a top-notch choice for sustainable flooring that still keeps the beauty for hardwood. But you probably already know that. However, if you choose the wrong rug or rug pad, your bamboo floors can end up stained, sticky, and damaged faster than you can say panda.
Because bamboo flooring has different properties than other hard floor surfaces, you need a specific type of rug pad that’s breathable and safe for bamboo.
Why Is Bamboo Floor Different from Hardwood?
Hint: It's not actually wood.
If you tend to associate bamboo flooring with hardwood flooring, you’re not alone — many people tend to put them together. However, they’re very different flooring types.
Bamboo actually isn’t a wood — it’s in the grass family! It is a woody grass, so it has a similar hardness to wood, but it has a different cellular structure and different properties. Bamboo also grows faster than wood, meaning many people see it as a more sustainable building resource than real hardwood.
So what does this all have to do with your floor and getting a bamboo floor mat?
It means you’ll want to consider different rug pad options to go on top of the bamboo floor based on how bamboo-the-grass works.
While we can give suggestions for the best rug pad materials for your bamboo floor, we always recommend you check with your floor manufacturer about what type of bamboo floor protectors are safe with your specific flooring.
What Our Bamboo Floor Rug Pads Can Do For You
Bamboo Floor Protector |
Whether it's heavy furniture, the occasional scuff marks that come with high traffic areas, or a rug with latex backing, a rug pad will act as a floor protector for your pristine bamboo flooring.
For heavy furniture, a thicker pad can add more cushioned protection. But no matter the thickness, all our pads will keep your bamboo floors stain-free and in good condition. |
Allow Air Flow |
Similar to hardwood floor, bamboo flooring emits moisture over time. That’s why our mats for bamboo flooring have great breathability and airflow to let that moisture out. (Otherwise, you’ve got some trapped liquid waiting to cause all sorts of mold and moisture damage.)
Good airflow facilitation will also help keep dust or dirt particles from building up under your rug. |
Non Slip Grip |
With a hallway or entryway rug on slippery hard floors like bamboo, your rug can shift and move with every step. Not the case when you use one of our non slip rug pads. |
Prevent Stains |
One of the biggest concerns we see with bamboo plank flooring is possible staining. This most commonly happens if you use a plastic mat or synthetic rubber-backed rug (the cheap types of pads).
If this is your concern, you're in the right place! None of our rug pads will stain or mark your floor. Our rug pads are colorfast and will make sure that your colorful rugs don't stain the floor. |
Preserve Your Rug |
Using one of our quality rug pads can prolong the life, beauty, and comfort of your rug because it reduces the friction and pressure on the rug. Instead of wearing down your expensive area rug, our durable rug pad takes the punch and keeps your rug looking great.
Just think of our rug pad as your rug’s personal bodyguard. |
Add Comfort |
Sinking your feet into a thick, plush rug is what home should feel like. Our quality rug pads offer that extra oomph of comfort so you can feel cozy in your home. |
Made in the USA |
Made, cut, and shipped right here in the USA, we make sure all our pads come out top-quality with all the best materials. |

So, Can You Put Rubber on Bamboo Floors?
If it’s our premium natural rubber, you bet!
If it’s some cheap synthetic rubber from an unknown overseas location? Ehhh… maybe not.
Some of our best non slip bamboo floor mats use either all natural rubber (ahem, our Super Lock Natural rug pad) or a combination of natural rubber, felt, and other natural materials.
Find The Best Rug Pad For Bamboo Flooring
The right rug pad for you and your bamboo floor will primarily depend on your rug size. The rug size will often dictate whether you need a non slip rug pad or not.
For Smaller Rugs and Bamboo Floor Runners (6x9 Rug or Smaller)
If you have an entryway rug, bathroom rug, bath mat, runner rug, or other small area rug, you'll likely want a mix of cushion and grip on your bamboo floor. You can use a natural rubber-backed rug pad like our Super Lock Natural, Nature's Grip, RugPro, Contour Lock, or Superior Lock.
All of these quality rug pads use either natural rubber or a mix of natural rubber and felt. They all boast fantastic non slip traction to stop your rug from slipping even in high traffic areas. No more banana-peel-like rugs!
For Extra Comfort:
If you want more cushion for a medium sized rug or somewhere you stand a lot like the bathroom or kitchen, you want either the Contour Lock or Superior Lock rug pad. The Contour Lock has 1/8-inch thick felt and rubber padding for some subtle cushion, while the Superior Lock comes in two thicknesses (1/4" and 7/16”) for your choice of “oh la la” to “I live on this rug now” comfort.
For Low Profile Door Clearance:
If your rug goes under a door or if you worry about tripping hazards, a low profile pad is the way to go. Our thinnest pad safe for bamboo flooring is our grippy RugPro rug pad. At 1/16” thick, you’ll hardly notice the pad is there (aside from the fact that your rug is now safely locked in place until you want to move it).
For a little more cushion that’s thin enough to allow door clearance for most rugs, check out our Super Lock Natural or Nature’s Grip rug pads. Both these pads have excellent non slip grip, but also have an extra touch of natural rubber for cushion to put some spring in your step.
For Larger Area Rugs (8x10 Rug or Larger)
For a large area rug pad, you likely won't need to worry as much about the rug moving. Instead, think about how you’ll feel sitting on that rug when everyone and their mom comes to visit. You want to cushion the heck out of that rug (without destroying your bamboo floor).
We recommend choosing breathable floor mats like our Eco Plush 100% felt pad or our Cloud Comfort 100% visco elastic memory foam pad. These will offer a wonderfully plush and luxurious feel underfoot for area rugs on bamboo floors. Put these pads in your living room or bedroom and we think you’ll notice the difference.
Plus, both these pads have plenty of breathability and padding for your bamboo floors to keep your flooring safe and sound.
What You Shouldn't Put On A Bamboo Floor?
A cheap rubber-backed rug.
Just don’t do it. It’s tempting, we know. But it’s not worth it.
While you can find some quality rubber-backed rugs that won’t wreak havoc on bamboo floors, they’re few and far between. Why?
Because most companies use a lower quality rubber backing with color-staining plastics and harmful adhesives that can damage or stain your floor to cut costs. It may be cheap for you up front, but will cost a whole lot down the road when you’re renovating your floors to fix/hide the damage the cheap rug pads caused.

I live in Australia and my underlay leaves an unpleasant sticky coating on my compressed bamboo floor. I would like something to provide cushion and prevent slipping but not leave a residue. Also, I prefer natural fibers. What do you recommend?
I would ask the floor company for guidelines on what is okay for your bamboo flooring. If they state that natural rubber is okay then any of our natural rubber products will work for you. They will not mark or discolor your floor. Among our pads that offer gripping and cushioning are Contour Lock and Superior Lock. Both are made of recycled felt and natural rubber.
-
Can I use one of your pads under a rug with a latex backing? I have bamboo flooring.
Yes, you can. Take a look at both our Superior Lock and Contour Lock recycled felt and natural rubber pads.
-
We have a 9' x 6' rug on a bamboo floor. Can you please recommend a pad that will prevent the rug from slipping and most importantly won't stain the flooring? Thank you very much for your help.
For your size rug, I suggest looking at our Superior Lock or Contour Lock pads. These are made of felt and natural rubber and boast superb non-slip traction that will stop your rug from slipping. And as with all our products, they will not stain or mark your floor.
-
Which pad would you recommend for a 1/2" thick wool living room area rug for a newly installed bamboo floor? I am also looking for a pad for a cotton runner on the same floor.
Look at our Anchor Grip pad or the Superior Lock pad. Both are 1/8", so if you need clearance for the door, there will be no problem. While both of these have super strong grips, I don't recommend them if you are looking for comfort as well. For comfort and grip, I suggest our Superior Lock 1/4" pad.
-
I need a non-slip rug pad for a hall runner measuring 2'2" x 7'7". Which would be best on bamboo flooring?
I would take a look at our Anchor Grip and Contour Lock rug pads. Both are low-profile pads with powerful non-slip traction that stop mobile runners and rugs from moving. The former is a soybean oil-based polymer blend while the latter is made of felt and natural rubber. They are safe for your bamboo flooring and will help to conserve its beauty and longevity over the coming years.
-
I recently purchased the Contour Lock pad for an 8' x 10' vinyl backed jute rug on a bamboo floating floor. Will this pad work since it has rubber in it? Also, do you make round pads?
The Contour Lock pad is made with natural rubber and not synthetic rubber so you should have no problems. It is safe for all floors and won't create any marks. And yes, we do cut round pads. Just select 'round' in the dropdown box when entering your rug's dimensions.
-
We want a pad for a 3' x 5' rug on the bamboo hardwood floor of our entry hall. We’ve been told not to use rubber and don't want anything that will catch the door or cause people to trip. Also, we want something that won't slide. What do you suggest?
Please take a look at our Anchor Grip pad which will fulfill all your requirements. This is a low-profile pad made from plant-based oils and soybean that is safe for your floor type. It has superb non-slip traction that will stop your rug from moving even under heavy foot traffic and will provide a good level of cushioning without bulking.
-
We have a new bamboo floor in the kitchen, and the manufacturer recommends a throw rug in front of the sink. They say it should be breathable and mesh or grid patterns are best. What do you recommend for a small rug by a sink to keep it from slipping?
I recommend our Anchor Grip, Super Lock Natural or Nature's Grip rug pads. All three are safe for your floor type and boast remarkable gripping power.
-
Are your natural rubber rug pads safe to use on Cali bamboo floors?
Yes, they are, but definitely, refer to your floor manufacturer to see what they say about using natural rubber on their bamboo flooring.
-
We have just installed solid bamboo flooring and were told to use open weave rug pads to prevent moisture from building up. What do you recommend?
If the bamboo flooring is sealed, I would take a look at Super Lock Natural and Nature's Grip. If it is not sealed, I recommend our Anchor Grip rug pad.
-
I have just installed Cali bamboo vinyl planks, and have been told not to use rubber rug pads. What do you suggest?
Our natural rubber is safe for all types of floors and finishes. However, we always recommend customers talk to the manufacturer of their floor for specific guidelines, as you have done. Therefore, I recommend either our Anchor Grip or Eco Plush rug pads for you. Anchor Grip is made from a soybean oil-based polymer blend while Eco Plush is a 100% heat-pressed felt pad. Neither of them contains any rubber.
-
I have a 9' x 12'3" Kerman rug on bamboo floors. The pile has been shaved down and so the rug is somewhat thin. Please advise on the right pad to select for a bit of softness underfoot.
I would first advise you to contact your floor manufacturer to ask them whether natural rubber is safe for your floor. If they say yes then I recommend Superior Lock. This is a felt and natural rubber pad that will give you grip and a very comfortable level of soft underfoot cushioning.
