• Q:

  Do I need a non-slip pad or a cushion pad?

  A:

  Non-slip pads are best for high-traffic areas such as foyers and hallways, where thin rugs and runners are prone to slipping and sliding. Our cushion pads add a plush layer for large rugs already anchored by furniture, such as living and dining rooms. Should you decide you need a degree of both grip and cushioning, opt for a felt and rubber pad.

• Q:

  Which pad works best with jute rugs?

  A:

  We would suggest Contour Lock or Superior Lock which are both felt and rubber pads. Both of these are made from a combination of rubber and recycled felt fibers. The felt upper layer is ideal for attaching itself to uneven rug surfaces such as those in jute rugs, while the rubber under layer keeps the rug firmly in place on the floor. Contour lock is 1/8" thick while Superior Lock comes in 1/3" or 7/16" thicknesses.

• Q:

  What are the thickness options for Superior Lock? Which one is best for my rug?

  A:

  Superior Lock is available in two thicknesses: 1/4” and 7/16”. We suggest a thinner option for smaller rugs in high traffic areas to prevent tripping and a thicker option for larger area rugs.

• Q:

  Which floor types is Superior Lock safe for?

  A:

  Superior Lock is made with a reinforced natural rubber backing and is designed to avoid common problems such as floor staining or sticking that can occur with many traditional plastic pads. Natural rubber is made to grip floors rather than stick to floors. Natural rubber contains very low off gassing properties when compared to imported PVC, which can often contain plasticizers that can react with your floor finish or end up sticking to floors. Always be sure to follow your flooring manufacturer's instructions and wait at least one month after refinishing your floors before putting down pads.

• Q:

  Which rug pad works best with radiant heat flooring?

  A:

  We suggest Contour Lock, Superior Lock, or Eco Plush. Contour Lock and Superior lock are made from a combination of rubber and recycled felt fibers and offer both cushioning and non-slip grip. Eco Plush is made from only felt and solely offers cushioning. Felt and rubber are both natural materials and are durable enough to withstand changing temperatures (such as those with radiant heat flooring) without breaking down or damaging the floor.

• Q:

  Which rug pads are best for shag rugs?

  A:

  We would recommend a felt and rubber pad like RugPro, Contour Lock or Superior Lock. If you want a low profile option, RugPro is the best fit. If you would like to add a some cushioning, Contour Lock or Superior Lock is recommended.

• Q:

  Which rug types work well with Superior Lock?

  A:

  Superior Lock is our signature felt + rubber pad and works well with all rug types such as jute, wool, Oriental, Persian and flat weave. With smaller rugs and runner rugs in high traffic areas, we recommend choosing a thinner size, as a thicker pad might cause too much lift on rugs causing people to trip.

  When should you use a felt + rubber rug pad?

  A:

  A Felt + Rubber rug pad offers the best of both cushioning and grip. Superior Lock is ideal for those looking to maximize cushion with rugs that need grip. Felt and rubber pads also do a fantastic job of promoting rug evenness and preventing bunching that can occur with thinner, lower pile rugs that tend to bunch or knot up easily. The felt surface layer fastens itself to the bottom of your area rug while the natural rubber backing keeps rugs firmly anchored to the floor.

• Q:

  Does this rug pad contain any odors?

  A:

  No. Our rubber and felt rug pads will not smell.

• Q:

  Which rug pad is recommended for wall-to-wall carpeting?

  A:

  Carpet Lock is specifically designed for application on wall-to-wall carpeting.

  Is Superior Lock a washable pad?

  A:

  To clean your Superior Lock pad blot it with a damp rag and then let the air dry it.

• Q:

  I know it's probably a preference, but what thickness is recommended for an expensive oriental rug? What do people normally purchase?

  A:

  I would suggest the Superior Lock felt and natural rubber pad at either the 1/4" thickness or 3/8" thickness. If your rug is big enough and doesn't require protection against slipping, I would say go for the Eco Plush all felt pad. Again, the 1/4" or 3/8" thicknesses would be fine.

• Q:

  Will the Superior Lock pad reduce noise levels or soundproof a floor if my drum kit is on it?

  A:

  We often sell Superior Lock 7/16" thickness to people who want some kind of soundproofing. This pad's dense layer of insulation will help to eliminate the noise coming from your drums.

• Q:

  Which rug pad do I need for a needlepoint carpet?

  A:

  The Superior Lock is the best pad for that kind of rug. It will firmly anchor it to the floor while providing lots of cushioned comfort.

• Q:

  What are the best pads for large Karastan area rugs?

  A:

  Our Super Lock pad would make a good choice. It provides luxurious cushioning while anchoring rugs securely to the floor to prevent movement. What's more its backing has a special coating that will prevent the pad from deteriorating, which is a common feature of low-cost latex pads.

• Q:

  I am looking for a pad to protect my baby from our hardwood floors. I would like something that is very soft.

  A:

  I recommend our 7/16" thick Superior Lock rug pad. Its thick layer of cushioned support will beautifully soften whichever rug is placed over it, providing gentle and comfortable padding for your baby.

• Q:

  Can I use the Superior Lock rug pad on my vinyl plank flooring?

  A:

  I recommend you get in touch with the manufacturer of your floor. They will have specific guidelines for what is safe and unsafe for your floor type. Very often we sell vinyl pads such as Anchor Grip for vinyl floors. This is a non-slip rug pad with a very plush feel. It is also waterproof.

• Q:

  Is your Superior Lock rug pad easy to cut? I need it for a cowhide rug that has an odd shape.

  A:

  No, Superior Lock is not an easy pad to cut at home. Instead, take advantage of our free custom cutting and trimming service which is available with every order.

• Q:

  I need a rug pad for a bound sisal rug that will also help insulate my daughter's floor in the winter. Part of her bedroom is over an exterior porch. As you can imagine, that part of the floor can get very cold. What pad do you recommend?

  A:

  I recommend our Superior Lock felt and natural rubber pad. Its thick layer of cushioning will provide the insulation that your daughter's room needs.

• Q:

  Does the rubber back of the Superior Lock pad have an odor?

  A:

  This rug pad has a natural rubber backing and it does not smell.

• Q:

  What is the best pad to use for oriental rugs on a marble floor? Also, some of my rugs will be going on top of wall-to-wall carpets and I don't know which pads will prevent moving and wrinkling.

  A:

  I suggest you use Superior Lock pads for both marble and carpet. In fact, we only recommend Superior Lock for carpets.

  I have a thin hand loomed Egyptian rug on a laminate floor and I want it to look more like a rug and not a bedspread. What thickness of padding do you recommend?

  A:

• Q:

  I have a 7'6" x 9'6" rug that is 1/2" thick and will go on a hardwood floor. I would like a pad that is at least 3/8" thick and which doesn't stain or stick to the wood laminate flooring. Is Superior Lock good for a laminate floor?

  A:

  Yes, Superior Lock will work perfectly for your floor and will not stain or harm it. This is a felt and natural rubber pad and it comes in three different thicknesses: 1/4", 1/3" and 7/16". However, we always advise customers to contact the manufacturer of their floor to see what materials they say are best.

• Q:

  I need a good soundproofing rug pad to go under an 11'x 9' rug. What have you got?

  A:

  The Superior Lock felt and natural rubber pad at 7/16" would be perfect. This is a non-slip pad with excellent sound dampening properties that will also give you comfortable underfoot cushioning.
