Runner Rug Pads
Runner rugs are tough to keep anchored. Our runner rug pads keep the most stubborn of rugs from slipping.
Runner Rug Pads

Long runner rugs tend to shift and slide out of place easily which can be annoying and dangerous. We have selected several rug pads that work particularly well as a runner rug pad to keep runner rugs anchored on hard surface flooring.

The Best Rug Pads for Runners by Runner Rug Sizes and Room
When you're choosing the best rug pads for runners, we recommend going with a thinner rug pad that has solid rug grip to keep your rug from slipping, bunching, or wrinkling.
The Best Rug Pads for a Small Runner Rug (2 x 5 Runner Rugs to 3 x 6 Runner Rugs, Etc.)

When we say a small runner rug, we generally mean these common sizes or smaller:
Just like a small area rug, these runners can often move and shift the most in all directions, so it’s really important to get a non slip rug pad that helps with creating non skid runner rugs. For these small runner rug sizes, we recommend a rubber runner mat. If your flooring manufacturer recommends against natural rubber, then our Anchor Grip rug pad is the best option which uses soybean oils and bio based PVC to provide a great rug gripper.
Our rubber backed runners include:
If you want your rug to lay flush on the floor and not have too much lift, the Super Lock Natural, Nature’s Grip, or RugPro are the best choices. For a rug where you want more foot support or cushion from a thick rug pad, Contour Lock or Superior Lock may do well.
The Best Rug Pad for a Bathroom Runner Rug
Bathrooms tend to take on more moisture, but it’s also nice to have a little extra cushion to stand on when you get out of the shower or are brushing your teeth. If you have a bathroom runner rug that needs a pad, our Super Lock Natural is a great choice with water resistant natural rubber and subtle cushioning and breathability.
If you want a bit more cushioning from your bathroom rug runner, Contour Lock would also work well because of the breathable felt that can absorb some water and the natural rubber backing provides a non slip pad for hard flooring.
The Best Kitchen Runner Mat for Kitchen Runner Rugs
Kitchen runner rugs can be a staple in your house that adds color, personality, and comfort. However, they aren’t complete without a rug pad to go under.
The right rug pad will add that extra bit of comfort and floor protection for your kitchen runners to keep your floor and your rugs in good condition. If you want the rug to lay flush on the ground, we recommend either the Super Lock Natural or Nature’s Grip rug pad.
If you want more cushion, our Contour Lock rug pad is an excellent choice with a budget-friendly mix of natural rubber and recycled felt. At just ⅛ inches this, this pad also won’t add too much extra height so you don’t have to worry about tripping hazards.
Looking for a memory foam kitchen runner pad?
If you’re looking for an anti-fatigue memory foam mat for your kitchen sink or other areas in the kitchen, our memory foam rug pads may be able to provide the comfort and support you’re looking for. Just keep in mind – these pads do not have slip resistance and can occasionally cause slipping or tripping hazards so if slipping or tripping is a concern, you may want to consider our Superior Lock felt and rubber rug pad instead.
The Best Runner Pad for Medium Runner Rugs (2 x 7 Runner Rug to 3 x8 Runner Rug)

When we say medium runner rugs, we generally mean:
With medium-length runner rug pads, the primary goal of the pad is still to keep the runner from slipping or bunching so we recommend one of our non slip rug pads. Since these runners are slightly longer, you may also want to have slightly more cushion under your feet. In this case, we recommend the Contour Lock rug pad, because it has a good balance of cushion and grip without adding too much height and creating a tripping hazard.
The Best Rug Padding for Long Runner Rugs (2 x 10 Runner Rug to 3 x 12 Runner Rug)

Long runner rugs and extra long runner rugs tend to blend together, but in this case, we’re talking about:
Basically, any 10 foot rug runners, 11 foot runner rug, or 12 foot runner rugs are what we’d consider a long runner rug.
The Best Rug Pads for Long Hallway Runners
For these rugs, especially if it’s a hallway runner rug, you’d be walking on the rug for a while meaning some extra cushion may feel nice on your feet. Because these tend to be high traffic areas and have a narrow width, we still recommend getting non slip floor runners.
Our number one recommendation would be the Superior Lock rug pad for cushion, grip, and soundproofing. The combination of durable natural rubber and thick recycled felt helps keep your rug locked in place, protect your floors and your rug, and keeps the downstairs neighbors from complaining about stomping or running.
If you’re not so concerned about the rug slipping or moving around (for example, with a wide runner rug), then you may want to look at our memory foam rug pads for even more luxurious walking comfort. Our top recommendation would be the Cloud Comfort.
However, if you need the runner rug to still fit under doors, a lower profile rug pad is the best choice. In this case, either the RugPro or Super Lock Natural would be good choices.
The Best Padding for Extra Long Bathroom Runner Rugs
Most extra long bathroom runner rugs fall into our long runner rug category. For these rugs, you want to consider door clearance, moisture and mold resistance, non slip grip, and comfort. Our best rug pad that fits all these categories would be the Contour Lock rug pad because it has a low profile of just ⅛ inches thick, the soft cushion of recycled felt, and grip of natural rubber. Plus, the pad is also moisture and mildew resistant.

Rug Padding for Extra Long Rug Runners (2 x 14 Runner Rug and Longer)

Anything equal to or longer than a 14 foot runner rug should be considered an extra long rug runner.
This includes:
With these extra long rug runners, we recommend similar considerations as those for long runner rugs. That means, comfort, soundproofing, and grip.
For the best combination of these three qualities, our Superior Lock rug pad is an excellent choice.
What’s Best for Hall Runners Extra Long?
For hall runners that are extra long, you don’t want to slip, but you also want plenty of comfort while you walk down the hallway. If you have kids or pets that like to run down the hallway, non slip grip is essential so our Superior Lock or Contour Lock rug pads are the best choices.
If you don’t have kids or pets and want maximum comfort, you may opt for our Cloud Comfort memory foam runner rug pad. However, keep in mind this does not have non slip grip, so only use this pad if you have a heavier rug that won’t slide around.
The Best Rug Pad for a Carpet Runner for Stairs

With a carpet runner for stairs, it’s especially important to get a rug pad that has good gripping qualities unless you plan to staple down the carpet or rug or use carpet tape.
If the rug or carpet will be stapled to the stairs, our Eco Plush felted rug pad will be safe for any flooring surface and make the stairs extra comfy on hard floors. If the rug will be moveable on the stairs, we recommend either our Contour Lock or RugPro rug pad.
The RugPro rug pad is our best gripping rug pad with a mix of felt to grip the rug and natural rubber to grip your stairs. This pad is very thin (1/16 inch thick), so it’s best if you want the rug to lay flush on the stairs and not have too much lift.
The Contour Lock is ⅛ inch thick with a mix of felt and natural rubber. It has excellent gripping power for both the floor and the rug, but also adds subtle cushioning to the floor for added comfort without lifting the rug too high off the ground.

The RugPro Is Perfect for Our Staircases
Highly recommend this as a great pad solution for stairs. The low-profile version is perfect for our staircases, as we don't want a raised scenario as we're shlepping up and down. The pads were also a perfect fit!

If you want a little extra cushion, a mix of grip and padding would be a good option. These include:

The Best Rug Pads for a Vinyl Floor Runner
Finding the best pad for a vinyl floor runner can be a bit tricky because each manufacturer has different instructions. While we haven’t had any issues with any of our pads staining or damaging vinyl floors, our top recommendation would be our Anchor Grip rug pad because it uses polyvinyl material and has spectacular non slip gripping power.
Note: We highly recommend double-checking with your flooring manufacturer to get their guidelines on what type of rug pad to use for their specific flooring and finishes as sometimes they recommend no rubber and other times they recommend only natural rubber.
When You Don't Need A Runner Pad
If you have a large rug or area rug, the right rug pad for you will likely not be a runner pad. Depending on the rug size, non slip grip may not be as important, meaning you can branch out to other rug pad materials like memory foam or 100% felt. For an area rug pad, we recommend prioritizing rug padding and checking out our collection of cushioned rug pads.

Customer Questions & Answers
-
I have a 2'11" x 12' Afghan Chobi runner for an entrance hallway. I am looking at the Anchor Grip and Super Lock Natural rug pads and wonder which one you would recommend.
In all honesty, you can go with either one because they will both do a fantastic job of keeping your runner secure in what I assume is a high-traffic area. Having said that, I recommend Super Lock Natural which is our best-gripping rug pad yet.
-
Which padding is the best for vinyl laminate in a hallway ? My oriental rugs are 2 feet by 8 feet.? The concern is scratching and staining as well to the floor and gripping is necessary. How long does it take for pads to arrive once they are ordered?
Our Superior-Lock pad is designed as a solution to problems such as floor scratching, stripping and staining. It is our best gripping pad , which holds rugs tightly in place and keeps them lying flat. The length of time our rug pad would take to get to you depends on where you live.
-
I am purchasing several 2'7" x 9'6" runners for a tile floor. What non-slip pad do you recommend that will also provide maximum comfort? Also, what do you recommend for thickness?
The Superior Lock 1/4" thickness is perfect for your runners and floor. This versatile and high-performing pad has generous cushioning for exquisite underfoot comfort as well as a powerful grip that's designed to prevent rugs from moving.
-
I need to get a pad for a 2'3" x 12' runner on a hardwood floor. However, I'm concerned that rubber will leave marks on the floor. What do you recommend?
With regards to rubber, we only use natural rubber in our products which doesn't stain or mark floors. For your runner, I suggest Anchor Grip. This pad is a soybean oil-based polymer blend with a powerful grip. It keeps stubborn rugs and runners in place even in high-traffic areas.
-
Can you recommend a pad for a 12' x 2'5" runner on the wood laminate floor of my apartment? I would like to use a felt pad to prevent floor discoloration.
I wouldn't recommend all felt pads because they're not non-slip. While none of our products discolor floors, I suggest you contact your floor manufacturer to see what materials they say are safe for wood laminate flooring.
-
What do you recommend for a 2.5' x 10' runner which is in front of our kitchen sink?
I recommend our Anchor Grip pad. It is made of a soybean oil-based polymer blend, has an exceptional grip and is waterproof. This rug pad is great in the kitchen environment where there are often spills and splashes.
-
I have purchased some Anchor Grip rug pads for two 2' x 8' runners and a 7'6" x 10' area rug that will go on my hardwood floors. Will you trim them to be around one inch smaller than my rug sizes?
Yes, with our free custom cutting service we will trim an inch from all sides. So, you will receive pads that measure 1'10 x 7'10". The pad for the larger rug will measure 7'4" x 9'10".
-
Can rug pads for runners be cleaned in a washing machine?
No, we do not recommend putting our rug pads in washing machines. To clean them use mild soap and water.
-
Can you make a pad to fit a 25' x 2' runner? Right now I have a pad cut in three pieces and they do not stay in place so the runner is always buckled.
Yes, we can make a pad that will fit your runner perfectly and keep it locked in place. Please go to our website and enter the exact rug dimensions for the pad of your choice. You will see a new size generated, and this will be the size you will receive in the mail. It will come to you as one piece.
-
I need a waterproof pad and am looking at your Anchor Grip. Would this block dog urine from getting through to my hardwood flooring?
Yes, it would. But note that this waterproof pad like all our waterproof products provides a temporary liquid resistant barrier. It is very effective at what it does which is to greatly slow down the passage of liquids. Provided you clean up the mess in a timely fashion it shouldn't reach the floor.
-
I need a non-toxic non-slip pad that doesn’t smell, for a runner by the kitchen sink. My 72-year-old mum lives with us and I can't risk her slipping. Also, I don’t want it to stain the hardwood like a previous pad from another supplier. Recommendations?
You need a strong gripping pad with a low profile, something very thin. I've got three suggestions for you. They are RugPro, Anchor Grip and Contour Lock. All are non-toxic and odor free and they will not harm or stain your floor.
-
Will the Contour Lock pad hold an indoor/outdoor kitchen runner rug in place? Also, I want to be sure that the rug doesn't slip off the pad.
The Contour Lock felt and natural rubber pad will work well with your runner rug, keeping it locked in place. It shouldn't slip off the pad because the felt on the top side will help to ensure that it lays flat and secure.
-
What pad do I use with Warmboard and wood engineered floors? I have an 8' runner and an entry rug.
I suggest you look at RugPro. This low profile felt and natural rubber pad is our strongest gripping pad and absolutely safe to use on your floors.
-
I am looking for an anti-slip and cushioned rug pad for a 2' x 20' runner on a hardwood floor. Do you have any recommendations?
I am going to suggest the Superior Lock recycled felt and natural rubber pad. This is one of our dual purpose pads which means it offers exceptional gripping and cushioning. I would go with the 1/4" thickness.
-
I have just put in engineered wood floors and want a pad that won't ruin the surface of my wood. Can you recommend one to go under a 3' x 14' runner in the hallway? I was looking at the 1/4" Superior Lock pad. Would that be a good choice?
I'm going to recommend RugPro which at 1/16" is a thinner pad. If you would like more cushion go for Superior Lock. Both pads will work in your situation, keeping your runner stable in the hallway. Neither will harm the wood surface.
-
I am going to order the Contour Lock rug pad for the 2'6" x 6' rug in my hallway. Do I click on runner or rectangle when selecting the rug shape?
You select runner in the dropdown menu.
-
We have 8' long high-density polypropylene runners with jute backing on our hallway's oak hardwood floor. Our dog races through our home and the runners go flying. Do you have a grip pad that will hold them in place and not damage the floor?
The Anchor Grip pad is the best option for that scenario. It is completely safe for hardwood floors and is our best non-slip pad.
-
I am ordering rug pads for a client who has three 144" long runners in hallways. I want the best grip for holding the pad in place on the wood floor and also holding the rug on the pad. Would Anchor Grip be better than pads with felt?
I'm going to suggest the Contour Lock or Superior Lock felt and natural rubber pads. Both will tightly grip the runners to keep them from falling off. They will also stop the rugs from slipping and sliding across the floor. While Anchor Grip is a great pad and will be fine I feel that the felt would hold rugs down better. Contour Lock is 1/8" thick and Superior Lock comes in two different thicknesses: 1/4" and 7/16".
